Tethered Boot/Bootrom Info and How to find out what your 3GS Bootrom Version is

You have probably heard the term "Tethered Jailbreak" or "Tethered Boot" used before. Well after October 2009 Apple started shipping new iPhone 3GS's that have a patched bootrom that does not allow the 24kpwn exploit which has been used for Jailbreaking. The good news is that you will still be able to Jailbreak your 3GS if you are on FW <= 3.1.2, however you will have to "tether" your device to your computer in order to boot it up. So basically anytime you reboot your phone or your battery dies and your phone dies and you have to boot it back up, your phone will turn on and boot up to the Connect to iTunes screen. You will then have to connect your phone to your computer and run blackra1n in order to boot your device back up.

This only affects devices that have the newer bootrom version 359.3.2
3GS's that have version 359.3 are not affected by this.

How to find out what your 3GS Bootrom Version is.

A general rule of thumb to finding out if your 3GS has the new bootrom or not is to check your serial number. Settings > General > About > Serial Number Check the 4th and 5th digit of your serial number which will be the week number your phone was made.
  • 3GS's that were made week 45 or later usually have a patched bootrom.
  • 3GS's that were made week 40 or earlier usually have the older bootrom.
  • 3GS's that were made week 40-45 usually have various results

So if your serial number starts with 88932 you can see that the 4th and 5th digits are 32 which would be week 32. This phone would have the older non-patched bootrom.

Also make note that if you have a phone that has been replaced under warranty your serial number isn't going to work for this. Pretty much all replacement phones have a serial number that starts with 5K and the 4th and 5th digit are not the week number like a non-replacement phone. Pretty much all off the shelf brand new iPhones bought from a store have a serial number that starts with the number 8 Only these serial numbers you can use the above method to check your phone.

NOTE: There is an app called f0recast that is supposed to tell you whether or not your 3GS has the newer bootrom or not. At this time of writing this guide the current version of f0recast is v1.0.4! Unfortunately this app isn't the best way at figuring out if your 3GS has the new bootrom or not because it doesn't actually CHECK your bootrom version like the methods BELOW do. All it does is check your SERIAL NUMBER and basically just gives you a rough estimate on if your phone is tethered or not. I have tried plugging in replacement phones that DID have the newer bootrom and f0recast told me that they DID NOT have the new bootrom when in fact they did have the new bootrom. f0recast thought that they didn't have the new bootrom though because it was only reading the 4th and 5th digits of my serial number. But being that the phone was a warranty replacement from Apple, the 4th and 5th digits were 02 so forecast interpreted this as being week 02 which as I explained above this is incorrect.

Now the methods below are 100% guaranteed to tell you whether or not your 3GS has the newer bootrom or not.

Bootrom Versions
359.3 = GOOD This is an older non-patched bootrom that does NOT require a tethered Jailbreak.
359.3.2 = BAD! This is a newer patched bootrom that requires a tethered Jailbreak.

~PC~

There are two different ways you can figure out what your bootrom is on a PC.
1. Using Windows Device Manager
2. Using USB View

~Using Windows Device Manager~
  • Connect your 3GS to your computer and put it into DFU Mode
  • Go into the Control Panel > System > Device Manager
  • Now scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand the section
  • Right click on Apple Mobile Device USB Driver and click Properties
  • Click on the Details tab
  • Now where it says Property click on the dropdown list and select Device Instance Path
  • Now slide the scroll bar all the way to the right and at the very end you should see [IBOOT-359.3] OR [359.3.2

~Using USB View
  • Download USB View
  • Connect your 3GS to your computer and put it into DFU Mode
  • Extract usbview.zip and open up usbview
  • Click on Options > Config Descriptors
  • Now click on File > Refresh
  • Now in the list on the right look for Apple Recovery (DFU) USB Driver
  • Click on it and now look on the right hand side for your iBoot Version

~MAC~
  • From your desktop click on the Apple icon in the top left corner and select About This Mac
  • Now click on More Info...
  • In the left column click on USB
  • In the right column click on Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode)

Can you please post this on the front page so that people who are lazy, or don't know how to search can see it.

Also, put in here info about the different Basebands to see if people finally understand about the whole 3.1.3 crisis!

I would like to say thank you. A few diff people do soooo much hard work so that many of us can benefit. I actually found out that my 16gb 3.1.3 version, 05.12.01 baseband, MC model (MC135) has the old bootrom 359.3 and bootloader 6.4....... So I guess I will continue to read, learn, experiment (a little) and wait........

Hello!
Well I could not see the bootrom version, because it is not visible. The SN was something, after 01, then immediately came imei. The updater logs in but I found this:
"IBoot iBoot-build-version = 636.66"
So what does this mean?

USB\VID_05AC&PID_1281\CPID:8920_CPRV:14_CPFM:03_SCEP:03_BDID:00_ECID:00000767657645642E_ IBFL:01_SRNM:[567567567NP]_IMEI:[014564565456456]
i see this with device manager and with usbview

For you guys not seeing your iBoot version, make sure your phone is in DFU MODE NOT RECOVERY MODE! If your phone has the iTunes logo when your doing this then your NOT in DFU Mode.
