How to put your iPhone/iPod into Jailbreak DFU Mode

This guide will show you how to put your iPhone/iPod into Jailbreak DFU Mode.

Q: What the hell is Jailbreak DFU mode?
A: Jailbreak DFU mode is a more low level than regular DFU mode. You will notice that when you first start restoring your device via iTunes your screen will turn WHITE for a brief moment when first restoring. This is because iTunes will shift your phone into an even more low level DFU mode before it begins restoring your phone.

Q: What the hell is the difference between regular DFU mode and Jailbreak DFU mode?
A: Regular DFU mode is good for restoring STOCK IPSW files that won't restore via regular Recovery Mode. Jailbreak DFU mode is needed when your trying to restore your device with a CUSTOM IPSW file that you created via PWNAGE Tool.

Q: How can I tell if my device is in Regular DFU mode or Jailbreak DFU mode?
A:
  • In Regular DFU mode your screen will be BLACK like in the picture on the LEFT.
  • In Jailbreak DFU mode mode your screen will be WHITE like in the picture on the RIGHT

OK So now that were past all that, let's walk thorough how to get your device into JAILBREAK DFU MODE!

Things you will need
  • redsnow 0.8 for Windows
  • 3.0 Firmware to use with resn0w. This is only for getting redsn0w to work so you can put your device into Jailbreak DFU Mode. You will still be able to select whatever FW you want to restore your device with AFTER you put your device into Jailbreak DFU Mode

How to put your device into Jailbreak DFU Mode
  • Connect your device to your computer
  • Make sure iTunes is CLOSED OUT COMPLETELY!
  • Open redsn0w
  • Click BROWSE and select the 3.0 IPSW file that you downloaded, then click NEXT
  • Now your at the Cydia/Icy install screen, just click NEXT because none of this matters anyways
  • OK now here comes the tricky part so PAY ATTENTION and read these next few steps BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER!!!
  • Now prepare to put your phone into DFU Mode. When you click NEXT redsn0w is gonna walk you thru the steps at putting your device into REGULAR DFU Mode. Now PAY ATTENTION and watch your device, AS SOON AS THE SCREEN ON YOUR DEVICE TURNS WHITE CLICK CANCEL IN REDSN0W!!!
  • Now open up iTunes and you should get a warning saying your device is in recovery mode etc, just click OK and move onto the next step.
  • Now while holding down the SHIFT KEY on your jeyboard, click on the RESTORE button in iTunes.
  • You can now select your CUSTOM IPSW file that you want to restore your device with!

Fucking redsnow keeps crashing on windows 7 beta here at work. RIGHT when it should be putting it into DFU mode!

Fucker. I need to find another way. I can get into "black dfu mode" if you will. I believe its referred to as recovery mode, but there are no itunes icons its just the black screen.

Anyone wanna quickly tell me how to get into DFU mode with some other CONFIRMED working method?

thanks but in redsn0w when i follow the instructions to jb my 3gs iphone it asks to put the phone to the restore mode not on the dfu mode..is that because redsn0w is modding the 3gs not flashing it as itunes do when upgrading process is done?

I thought I was VERY CLEAR in my OP but let me break it down for you guys again.

==========================

~RECOVERY MODE~

Use this mode when your phone doesn't boot and you need to restore your device with a STOCK Apple Firmware.

==========================

~REGULAR DFU MODE~

Use this mode when Recovery Mode won't work. SOMETIMES restoring CUSTOM IPSW works with this mode, but normally you need to use Jailbreak DFU Mode.

==========================

~JAILBREAK DFU MODE~

Use then when you are restoring CUSTOM IPSW files to your device otherwise you will receive ERROR 1600, ERROR 1604 etc.

Your crazy as hell dude lol hell yeah I care! Especially when I goto sell them I don't want them to be all beat up and shit, then I won't get near as much for them compared to if they were in good condition. I do that with all my stuff, I got a lot of expensive ass shit so I make sure to take care of all the shit I own!

Sometimes you have to EXIT redsn0w and then re-open it. Also make sure that iTunes is completely closed out.
