Can iPad do GSM voice call like iPhone?
Hi dude,
I'm wondering if iPad can be used as voice phone like iPhone. I've searched about it on the net but still not very clear.
From Wiki site, iPad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The side of the Wi-Fi + 3G model has a micro-SIM slot (not mini-SIM). Unlike the iPhone, which is usually sold locked to specific carriers, the 3G iPad is sold unlocked and can be used with any compatible GSM carrier.[41] Japan is the exception to this, where the iPad 3G is locked to Softbank.[42] In the U.S., data network access via T-Mobile's network is limited to slower EDGE cellular speeds because T-Mobile's 3G Network uses different frequencies.[43][44]

The ipad itself doesn't even have a mic, so i would so NO it cannot. On the other hand, Voip should work just fine with it. Just like the iPod touch, you would need one of those earphone with a mic on it. That's just my assumption

It probably could if you could port over the "Phone" app to the iPad. Just a thought correct me if I'm wrong.

No you won't ever be able to make a phone call on an ipad because then why would you need an iPhone? Apple isn't planning on going into competition with itself.
The iPad has an phone number assigned to it, it is just disabled from making voice calls and nobody is going to be able to enable it unless AT&T enables it.
The only thing I think AT&T should enable on the iPad is text messaging. You're payiing 30 bucks a month like you do with the iPhone to get unlimited data so you should at least be able to text since that is data.

Who asked whether Apple allow it? And since when has that bothered us?
I'm sure that with the correct software the iPad could make a GSM call and send/recieve text messages. After all, it IS a phone - this is how you get data to it over 3G, and i'm sure it wont be long before a third party app appears to allow us to do just this.

the phone part I guess wont work as its set up for data only but the SMS part should work as I have a USB GSM dongle and it recieves SMSs fine so the iPad should also have SMS access we just have to enable it.

Not true. I use vontage app and make calls all the time via VOIP to landlines and mobiles. You can go a step further and get a SIP account if that's what you want to do. In summary, there are plenty of apps that let you use the ipad to make phone calls and receive them.
