alochet, 2 easy ways to identify old boot rom.
1. model number, ie MB715. Any model number that is MB is old boot rom guarenteed. If it was MC model well that's different, you then need to check serial number.
2. As I just said serial number. 3rd number in the serial is year, eg 86028XXXX, in that example year would be "0" or 10 meaning 2010. if it is 9 then you get the picture. The 4th and 5th numbers are the week it was manufactured. In the above example this is week 28, so second week in July.
Now I have my 3GS which is an MC model, I thought it was new, but this is where it gets a little grey. part way through the MC model production is when they changed from the old boot rom to the new boot rom. So what this means is that if your week is 40-44 you could have the old boot rom. Lucky for me my serial indicated that my 3GS was made in week 32 so guess what I have the old boot rom even though it is an MC model.
So the easy way with serial on a 3GS is if example XX938XXXXX that is going to be old boot rom. If it was XX940XX well you could have the new boot rom, and that means more of dig to find out.
Anyway I hope that helps
