Need some Help on How to JB and Unlock a 3GS

HI Everyone ! Just need some help with Jailbreaking and Unlocking a 3GS.

I KNOW there are guides and lots of how tos, but I read them all and I just need to put all my work in a step-by-step order. I need to secure my Baseband or not ?

Now I have non-functional iPhone, and made up my mind to go to 4.1 and fix this asap.

Where do I go to download the FW ? And how do I upgrade to 4.1 ? Do I NEED to have TinyUmbrella to secure my Baseband from going to 5.14.02 ??? And then where I go after Upgrade ? Limera1n or Greenp0ison ? And next ? How do I unlock and have final steps for my phone ??

Please include all links for the required software and all videos or pic I need. Thanksssss !!!!!!!!!

First thing you need to know is if you have a new or old bootrom. Before you attempt anything. If you have a new bootrom then you can't go to 4.1 without preserving the baseband. Not yet to my knowledge anyway. If you have an old bootrom then you can just follow what people told you here.

Hey demonknight9 can you tell me if I have the old bootrom or the newer one?

I have a 3gs firmware 4.0.1 (8a306), model mb715LL, Modem firmware 05.13.04

I used F0recast to see if I have the old boot rom, and accroding to this article I have the old one.

F0recast: Easiest Way To Find Out iPhone 3GS Bootrom Version - iPhone Hacks

Does that mean I can Unlock and Jailbreak my phone using the above guides?

Should I check out my bootrom via the dfu method?

Yes you can jailbreak and unlock. But make sure you use either Sn0wbreeze of greenpoison as not to update your baseband.

Thanks rainman. Can I jailbreak to 4.1 and be unlocked too or is it just for 4.0.1?

Isnt there a trick where you can upgrade to 4.1 without touching the baseband?

Should I keep 4.0.1 or should I go with 4.1?

THanks

forecast does not tell you your baseband. You need either the new tiny umbrella which I think it does tell you what bootrom you got or follow this tut How to Check iPhone 3GS New Bootrom / Old Bootrom (iBoot) Version | Redmond Pie

---------- EDIT ----------

More importantly why don't you people just go to the jailbreaking section on this forum first and when you know what can be done and if unsure about any of the steps to take ask your questions. It's really easy, this is the link Jailbreaking - SiNfuL iPhone

I was going to go there, but I had the same issues as the original poster, so I thought it would be better to keep it all in one thread. I do have the old bootrom version.

alochet, 2 easy ways to identify old boot rom.

1. model number, ie MB715. Any model number that is MB is old boot rom guarenteed. If it was MC model well that's different, you then need to check serial number.

2. As I just said serial number. 3rd number in the serial is year, eg 86028XXXX, in that example year would be "0" or 10 meaning 2010. if it is 9 then you get the picture. The 4th and 5th numbers are the week it was manufactured. In the above example this is week 28, so second week in July.

Now I have my 3GS which is an MC model, I thought it was new, but this is where it gets a little grey. part way through the MC model production is when they changed from the old boot rom to the new boot rom. So what this means is that if your week is 40-44 you could have the old boot rom. Lucky for me my serial indicated that my 3GS was made in week 32 so guess what I have the old boot rom even though it is an MC model.

So the easy way with serial on a 3GS is if example XX938XXXXX that is going to be old boot rom. If it was XX940XX well you could have the new boot rom, and that means more of dig to find out.

Anyway I hope that helps

I thought you can only preserve the baseband on an I4 only. Also theirs no unlock yet for the new baseband until after IOS 4.2 comes out.

No, you can preserve the baseband on a 3GS with the old bootrom if you were jailbroken on 3.1.2 with jailbreak me. Just use snowbreeze and cook a firmware plus install Spirit2Pwn. By the looks of it new bootrom can be done as well, look here: Restore/Jailbreak iPhone 3GS iOS 4.1 preserve baseband: with Sn0wbreeze 2.0.2 for Windows - SiNfuL iPhone
