Mac OS is build on top of linux !!!
apple tread a very thin line between open source and Proprietary software
any improvements they make to the base system apple MUST feed back under GPL
but their interface and windows system is all Proprietary
so is not required to share with the open source community
if you run the command uname from terminal
you will get the reply Darwin
Darwin is the open source version of linux that OSX and iOS are build on

i remember posixninja mentioning one of his projects is a version of iTunes without all the bullshit
as he is a linux developer... if this project will ever see the light of day it will be on linux first
