Is there any way of knowing how a phone was jailbroken?

My friend bought a jailbroken iPhone 4 of someone but he wants to know which method was used to hack the phone. Is it possible to know if it was via Jailbreakme3 or redsn0w or whatever?

No, there is no way to tell what method was used to jailbreak because all methods produce the same end result.

o nee of installing bite sms...just ook throuch cydia packages...if there is one called saffron(jailbreakme 3.0 files) then it is JailBreakMe(3.0) if not then anything else!

No way to know how it was jailbroken, although certain methods exhibit different features/glitches after a JB, for example, the JailbreakMe causes the respring spinning wheel to appear on your main SB page after a respring which goes away after moving to a different page.

If JBMe3 was used, saffron files will be there in Cydia Packages, if you see a skull boot logo, greenpois0n, redsn0w is undetectable, sn0wbreeze on 4.2.1 gives you a snow flake boot logo, but thats all I know off. Oh, and btw, if you see saffron files in Cydia packages, which indicate that JBMe3 was used, you should IMMEDIATELY see if PDF Patcher is installed, because PDF Patcher patches the security hole in the font-type system to prevent malware. I dont see any saffron package in Cydia. And its on iOS 4.3.3. So I guess its safe to assume it was redsn0w, right?
And btw, do I only need to install the PDF patcher if I used jailbreakme 3.0 or should it be used with ALL jailbreaks?

The "PDF Patcher 2" should be used on all jailbreaks to patch the exploit. I don't know about saffron, so you'll wait for other knowledgeable members to reply.

You need pdf patcher 2 only for saffron, cuz all the other jailbreaks aren't based on pdf bugs, most are bootrom exploits. so if jbme3 was used, and you are able to locate saffron files in the cydia packages section, install the pdf patcher, other jailbreak methods don't need it

And its not safe to assume it is redsn0w. sn0wbreeze on 4.3.3 is undetectable as well, because the exploit is initiated through the firmware and not through a bug in the client side..

Crapple left iOS 4.3.3 vulnerable to a PDF exploit, which allows JailbreakMe.com to jailbreak your iPhone. This serious flaw is how Comex was able to develop JailbreakMe 3.0 (as this is how the Jailbreak functions… through this flaw in the iOS firmware). Everyone is vulnerable, hence there was an 4.3.4 update. But you don't need to update to 4.3.4/4.3.5, as Comex released the "PDF Patcher 2" to kill the PDF exploit.

This vulnerability was actually addressed by Crapple in Mac OS X v10.6.8/Security Update 2011-004, but a fix was never pushed to iOS. (Its CVE identifier is CVE-2011-0202.)

When Apple released iOS 4.2.9/4.3.4 to patch this vulnerability, it received a different CVE identifier (CVE-2011-0226).

i thought if you used redsn0w there was a pineapple instead of an apple logo (like how there is the skull for greenpois0n).
