Also tried this on my iPhone 3G 4.2.1 for about 30 mins. The hack does give you 80mb free ram (from 50mb in my case) during idle but doesn't remove the lag when playing Plants vs Zombies with many plants on the screen (for example in zen garden) and doesn't show any improvement when loading the game. Decided to remove the hack afterwards. ^^

Just thought everyone should know this:
Using this or any VM mod decreases the life of the flash memory chip (where everything is stored).
The actual RAM that comes in an iPhone is designed to have a lot of reads and writes to it, but this mod creates a file on the Flash Memory and does a lot of reads and writes to it. The flash memory has an expected life of about 10,000 read/writes while actual RAM has a life of about 100,000 read/writes.
In case you didn't understand that, this mod can potentially make you iPhone's storage space for music, apps, the actual firmware, etc. die faster than expected.
This does not mean this is a bad mod, it just means you should be careful and only use it if you really need it. And if you don't notice much of a difference, then i would delete it.
This link provides a more in-depth description if you would like:
http://www.funkyspacemonkey.com/ipho...ry-price-risks
BTW - If you read the webpage above, this mod is called "the .plist version" by that website.

it's good to increase the memory but i won't take the risks.
i'm afraid to try it because it will decrease the life of my iphone.

Hello, guys, I know this is old. I installed the plist version on my Iphone 3g and I followed monsieurTalbot advice to remove the swap files in var/vm to make my phone run smoother again. It was indeed really work. But now I notice that my swap files are totally gone. The var/vm folder is empty!!!
IS THIS OK??? memory still hits 70MB after freeing RAM though and I notice better performance without the swap files. Can someone explain this ???
I tried to restart the phone and the swap file is created after restart. Does that mean after cleaning the var/vm, you have to restart??
Honestly I am far happier with my phone's performance without the swap files.

This thread is like the ever living thread that refuses to die. The link that was given here by Haffinator is an old link, and would not even work well with firmware 5.0 as it causes crashes. I have tinkered with and edited the com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist and com.apple.virtualMemory files a great deal ever since this tweak came out. Many others have different versions of this tweak that can be downloaded all over the net. I've experimented with all of them on various iphones. So here are my thoughts about this tweak. First and foremost if you have an iphone 4 or 4s, why even bother you do not need it LOL. This is only for people with older phones with 256 mb memory or less. Chances are you are going to upgrade your phone soon if you are having issues with memory. They say this can reduce the life of your phone and that is true, but you would seriously have to hold on to your iphone 3g for another 5 years or so and what are the chances you will do that? Your phone puts background apps in virtual memory so it is technically not writing to the memory chip every second as people who try to get you to believe. So here is the deal, I have 3 different variations of this tweak, but I find that smaller swap files are better as they are created as needed instead of having a 512 or 256 mb swap file. Also I do not have any crashes or anything on my phone and it does not lag. Keep in mind that if you have a ton of stuff on your older phone, it is going to lag. Nothing can be done about that especially if you understand the memory you have is limited. Here are the plist files I have on my phone. I had to upload them since it does not show all the code when I paste it into the post here.
512 MB -----------> Firmware 5.1.1 512MB.rar
64 MB -----------> Firmware 5.1.1 Mod4.rar
Seems I forgot to say where to put the files:
com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist goes into system/library/launch daemons
com.apple.VirtualMemory.plist goes into Library/Preferences
*REBOOT YOUR PHONE AFTER COPYING THE FILES TO THE FOLDERS*
*By the way I am not responsible if your phone suddenly decides to die because that can happen for many reasons and if you need this, then like me you have an older phone you are probably doing too much with so use at your own risk!!!!
****UPDATED TODAY (8-2-2012) ADDED BOTH VERSIONS

By the way, I have been using virtual memory on my phones since IOS 3 was released in summer 2009. I still have my iphone 2g running a custom firmware 3.1.3 with virtual memory. I still also have my iphone 3g, which has firmware 4.2.1 on there and it was slow until I enabled the virtual memory and removed a lot of the unecessary launch daemons, now I use it to play games. I now currently have a 3gs which I use with firmware 5.0.1, and virtual memory works well on it too. The thread on launch daemons here was instrumental in speeding up my phone along with virtual memory. That's 3 phones I use virtual memory on, and one of them since 2009. Like I said in the other post, I find the smaller files to be more stable, so I use it almost exclusively. I thought I would add to this considering how many phones I play around with and it is almost 3 years I have been using virtual memory.

I have been using this tweak on my 3GS 5.1.1 (64 MB version) for a few days now. There is definitely an improvement on the amount of stuff that I can do at once. I have ported Siri working well, can web browse even in a hog like Safari, and can play games like Infinity Blade II. Only problem is, the phone now is more unstable and crashes frequently. I have a respring crash about twice per day and I reboot crash once per day. I may uninstall and just do one task at a time, maybe disable Siri when playing games or something.
Thanks to Corsair for the links and help, as well as the OP. Definitely a cool feature.
