AT&T to unlock iPhones - April 8th 2012

Here’s AT&T’s official statement:

"Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

What does this mean? Once unlocked, your AT&T iPhone will be able to be used with any compatible GSM carrier worldwide!

my iphone 4 is locked to att but iam currently in egypt using gevey sim i have a friend living in the usa so what do i tell him to do to get it unlocked

Well the idea is your device must be contract free (or the contract must have ended) and you must still be with AT&T I believe.

Do you guys think that the iPhone prices will rise or fall because of this statement? I'm looking into buying another iPhone but should I jump now or after this sunday?

does at&t permit one iphone per customer to be unlocked, or if they don't care, as long the customer have aoutstanding account, then we will have chance to unlock our phones

Jailbroken or not, older or new basebands, starting april 8th. you can finally unlock your AT&T iPhone for free, from AT&T themselves! (read conditions below)

So, earlier on my twitter account i found a couple of links with great news to people that like me, are locked on our iPhone 4 with AT&T, having to carefully use/wait for Ultrasn0w to preserve our BB as well as thousands of you having an expensive iPod (that means you, fucking 4.11.08). well, it is official, starting on April 8th. AT&T will factory unlock for FREE any iPhone 4 that was bought Off-Contract or that are "in good account standing and are done with your obligated term of commitment (including having paid an early termination fee.)"

Heres the Official AT&T Statement:

I saw this last night cat wait slight issue for me I'm not a at&t customer I'm in a diff country with a iPhone 4 are you allowed more then one unlock? Can someone else get my iPhone unlocked?

yes you can, all you need to do is call AT&T customer support, or email them about it if you are overseas. i'm not sure about the number of unlocks you have, but it only makes sense that you only have one phone on the contract under your name, so asking to unlock some other phone doesn't make sense, and if you bought them off-contract, they will only ask for the information of the phone (IMEI, serial number, etc) verify it against their database and unlock it accordingly. that was the response i got from customer support at AT&T earlier, but i guess that to be sure, we're gonna have to wait a couple more days and see how things happen. you never know with those bastards....

So, if I am still under 2 year contract I won't be able to unlock? Unless I pay early termination fee?

Does any one know if ATT will unlock phones that are bought used. In other words, if I bought an ATT iphone on ebay and want it unlock but I have never used it with ATT, will they still unlock it or is it only for people who got the phones new and used them with ATT for the 2 years?

Awesome! Something tells me the value of the iPhone 4 and 3GS that I've been too lazy to sell just went up $50-100.

Reads to me as if they will only do this for AT&T customers. If you're not a AT&T customer, this is meaningless.

No they won't! You have to be currently with AT$T and your contract must be over before they will unlock your iPhone. Oh, and your account must be in good standing, no late payments, etc.
Officially this will be offered for those who want to use their phones internationally. You mention T-Mo as a reason and you'll get foot in your ass.
