This is a noob question. How can we find out what carrier the phone is locked to by the model number (MD272LL).

I can use itools to find out what my iphone 4s is locked to what carrier?

It will tell you the region of your iphone, not 100% sure if that model region is US then it is ATT CHEERS!!!

U can search imei here Check IMEI - IMEI.info , and you will see what carrier is locked
