Upcoming Version of RedSn0w Will Enable Downgrade of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2/3
MuscleNerd has announced that an upcoming version of RedSn0w will support restoring and allow for downgrade of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2/3 for those with SHSH Blobs saved.
Upcoming redsn0w supports restoring, including iPad2/3 and 4S downgrades (with blobs) Twitpic - Share photos and videos on Twitter ..also stitches on the fly 
As we noted earlier, this downgrade technique differs from the one discovered by iH8Sn0w. It does not use any Apple copyrighted code.
This will allow those with their SHSH Blobs saved to downgrade to iOS 5.0.1 for an untethered jailbreak.

if apple didnt close it in 5.1.1, there this should also work to downgrade to 5.1.1 if they release to 5.2

I noticed this on twitter earlier, pretty awesome. What I don't understand though, is if RedSn0w is what is doing the restoring, why does it still need saved shsh?

The device requires authorization for firmware installs. A stock install checks with Apples servers. Gs.apple.com if you have ever looked in your hosts file. What SHSH saves are those authorization codes received from Apple during a firmware install. Redsnow will then feed those authorization codes to the device during the downgrade install. It's the same thing as TinyUmbrella and iFaith (TSS server (4.x) and stitched IPSWs (5.x) respectively) do now with A4 devices. The Dev team finally discovered a way to do this for A5 ones. This is fantastic news for A5 device owners who were smart and lucky enough to have saved SHSH for 5.0.1. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 will always have a jailbreak on that firmware.
This is great progress for the jailbreak community.
If this works for 5.1(.1), and the 5.1(.1) jailbreak is released, the iPad 3 will also always have a jailbreak on that firmware. That seems to be the next logical step. Unless, of course, they hold off on the 5.1(.1) jailbreak for the next iPhone/iOS.

From what little information we have, it looks like it will support a downgrade to 5.1. And if this isn't patched in 5.1.1, like rockstar said, it should help if 5.2 is released. Then we will be able to go to 5.1 and 5.1.1 (once TinyUmbrella is updated to support 5.1.1). I'm assuming they are planning on releasing a 5.1 (maybe 5.1.1) jailbreak. Possible both Firmwares like the 4S and 5.0 and 5.0.1.

In more excited about this then a 5.1 jailbreak release.
Being able to select a firmware is far more appealing to me.
Hopefully this is released, majority can go back to 5.0.1 and JB.
