Advice to unlock 3gs on 5.1.1?

I have a 3gs (probably new boot rom) on baseband 05.12.01, iOS 4.3.3, originally unlocked with Ultrasn0w 1.2.4. If I want to upgrade to 5.1.1 (jalbreak with Absinthe) and then unlock, how should I proceed to get the unlock?

My understanding is that installing 5.1.1 will change my baseband. So, if I upgrade, would I become unable to unlock at 4.3.3 again? (I have SHSH for 4.3.3, 5.1.1, and others inbetween).

redsn0w to create a custom firmware to preserve baseband. flash 3GS in pawned DFU mode and jailbreak with absinthe. ultrasn0w needs to be updated for 5.1.1. or you can use ultrasn0w fixer for 5.1.1 (in addition with ultrasn0w) in the meantime.

Even if your baseband changes you can always flash your baseband to 6.15.00 ( iPad Baseband/ultrsn0w unlockable)
DON'T FORGET YOU CLICK THANKS!

The OP has a unlockable baseband 5.12. Dont upgrade to ipad baseband. Use a redsnow to create a custom firmware. Put it in dfu mode and restore. Upgrade to ipad baseband may destory ur gps.

Before I proceed with this approach, is this completely reversible to get back to the unlocked 4.3.3 with the device in all ways exactly as I have it now? I have the 4.3.3 blobs.

if you created the no_BB firmware correctly and flash, there shouldn't be any issues... not sure if you can go back. I just did my niece's 3GS over the weekend

I upgraded my firmware to a stock 5.1.1 and it did not overwrite 6.15BB.
Then I used RedSn0w to JB without checking IPad baseband.
Had no problems.

I am still curious, if I proceed, is it possible to fully go back to the state the 3gs is in now?

Another option is to use Sn0wbreeze to create a custom firmware so you don't have to use Redsn0w or absinthe.

Also, the dev-team hasn't updated ultrasn0w for 5.1.1. You need to add repo.iparelhos.com to cydia and install ultrasn0w fixer 5.1.1 with ultrasn0w for the unlock to work on 5.1.1.

Which is the best way to go if I want to ensure full reversibility to my current situation, if I decide to go back to 4.3.3 unlocked?

So, 3gs owners needing an unlock, should just have a friend AT&T customer call for an official unlock, and then proceed with 5.1.1 and Absinthe without worrying about the baseband? And then to go back to 4.3.3, the official unlock will survive and the newer baseband won't matter?

Between these two approaches, which is the best way to go, if I want to be completely reversable to my current 4.3.3 jailbreak and unlock? (I understand both preserve baseband, but are there any other issues in full reversibility?)

Also, can these two approaches be used after Apple stops signing 5.1.1, if I don't get to updating the phone until after then. I have the firmware file and the 5.1.1 shsh file on my hard drive, but have done nothing with them. Do I have to do anything more before Apple stops signing?

If I get a friend to do this, I would still need to use one of the above jailbreak methods if I want to preserve my baseband. But there would be no need for an ultrasnow unlock even if I go back to 4.3.3. If I have the friend AT&T customer unlock it this way, am I correct I could choose to do a normal 5.1.1 install followed by Absinthe, and would still be able to go back to 4.3.3 with a current baseband, right?

This 3gs is used on TMobile USA. Still not sure which is the best way to go.

You can always go back to 4.3.3
Just do not update your baseband in the process of going to 5.1.1 otherwise you will loose an unlock
Make a custom firmware with redsn0w and activate with an AT&T sim!

You will need to install ultrasn0w fixer on 5.1.1
Enjoy the new iOS!
If I have helped please press the little thanks button in the right hand corner

Am I understanding correctly that I can create the custom firmware in redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze AFTER Apple stops signing 5.1.1 from the firmware and shsh files I have already, if I don't get to updating the phone until after then? I think I have done enough now just to save the firmware and blob that I can do this upgrade later when I have more time, even after Apple stops signing 5.1.1. I can stitch the custom firmware later, right?
