The latest iOS 5.1.1 firmware can be unlocked with SAM unlock tool provided they have saved their activation tickets.

The people who unlocked via the SAM tool can create a custom IPSW and run iOS 5.1.1, but right now it’s a tethered jailbreak
Create Custom iOS 5.1.1 IPSW to Preserve Baseband For Unlock
Pre-requisites:
Download the latest Redsn0w 0.9.11b4.
Download original IPSW for iOS 5.1.1
Backed Up Sam Unlock Activation tickets ( Cookie or Redsn0w ).

iOS 5.1.1 Preserving baseband guide:
Step 1: After downloading redsn0w, start it.
Step 2: Go to Extras > Custom IPSW.
Step 3: Choose the original IPSW 5.1.1
Step 4: Now the custom IPSW file will be created by redsn0w, the one that has preserved the baseband meaning one will still be on the previous version (baseband).
Step 5: Go to Extras > Pwned DFU to enter Pwned DFU mode. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 6: Once there, go to iTunes and press Shift+Restore (Windows) or Option+Restore (Mac).You need to choose the correct IPSW file. It will have a prefix “No_BB”.
Step 7: As it’s a tethered jailbreak, you need to boot tethered while it’s trying to reboot after restoration. To do that, go to Extras > Just Boot!

Now you’ll have a custom IPSW on iOS 5.1.1 with a preserved baseband.
Unlock iPhone using SAM 5.1.1 activation ticket backup:
We have heard reports that some SAM 5.1.1 users are stuck again with locked iPhones, but we have tested the guide and we can confirm its works on iOS 5.1.1 tethered jailbreak.
Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 5.1.1.
Step 2: Install SAM on iOS 5.1.1.
Step 3: Revert Lockdown to stock.
Step 4: SHSH the backup activation ticket to this path: /var/root/Library/Lockdown.
Step 5: Reboot your device.
Step 6: Disable SAM.
Step 7: Reboot, and then wait for the Carrier Signals to Appears.
CONGRATS! You have unlocked your iPhone using SAM backup on 5.1.1 firmware. Enjoy!

any ideea why it wouldnt work on a fresh install ,ipsw made with snowbreeze,ios 5.1.1 unthethered?
after installing sam i get stockification error on step 3
didnt work with custom baseband made with redsnow,tethered
tryed to deactivate with redsnow and replace lockdown folder but stil no carrier signal(in sam it says activated under status but no signal)
some clue?
Apparently it was a problem with the disk that was repaired by redsnow jailbreak proces

I had to switch back to my Gevey as it wont work.

I think we need an updated SAM for this to work, or it may never work

guys sam is not working to unlock your phones you don't read about it?if you have saved the aptickets you can unlock you iphone on ios 5.1.1 i did and is working but you have to ssh into your phone and place those tickets.

SAM is working fine,the problem with stockification error was repaired when 4.3.3 was released
re-jailbreak your iphone with redsnow,that's how i solved my problem

An easier way: IF u had the opportunity to download "Cookie" b4 on Cydia and saved ur backup on its server, u can just redownload it again once u have restored and jb'd and hit restore backup activation ticket and reboot, then it's good to go!

You only needed internet connection to restockify, you didn't need to restore.

to bad the initialization of the iphone put me to set up wireless and not used it........
so far i support the post of acrazy,the unlock works on 5.1.1

For the people that have their activation ticket saved...in order for 'Step 3: Revert Lockdown to stock.' to work you will need to connect to wifi first and then click on the Revert Lockdown to stock button on Sam.

I have tried without wifi and didn't get anywhere, and was using Gevey for 2 days! Until came to my office and used the wifi to do it, and now my phone working flawlessly!

im in afghanastan and i have an i phone and its thru sprint it is is off and i need to unlock this phone i have tried everything so far can anybody help me i can't put redsnow at all for some reason

Noe I have a big problem, after a while since SAM unlocked my phone, my sim card goes dead! Now I can't use my phone because it is unlocked on one sim witch is dead. Can I make any changes to the SAM Ticket for working with my new sim?

The phone is the same, the ticket is saved, the sim is from the same carrier, but the IMSI AND ICCID from the sim are different!

I think I'm not the only one in this situation, so, can someone do somthing for us?

I am also in Afghanistan, Kabul. I got mine friend unlock his iphone via SAM. I can do for u if u have saved ur SAM unlock tickets

You can unlock an iphone if I have SAM tickets saved? I want to unlock it for another sim, from the same carrier witch SAM tickets are saved!

I was able to restore my saved Sam activation ticket on my Iphone4 an option on redsnow
0.9.12b1 before jailbreak *to "Add activation ticket"

My question:
Can I use other's *saved "activation ticket" of other country's carrier(i.e. Philippines-Smart carrier)?

Anyone tried this?

I was updated my iPhone 4s AT&T carrier I activated it after update to 5.1.1 with AT&T sim card then i installed Sam then copy my lockdown backup file to var/root/library then turn of device installed sim card woila it is working great .
