Meaning of "push"?

feel really stupid by asking this but in the settings>mail, contacts, calendars> fetch new data what does it mean by the "push" option? like i know what push notifications are but what does this option do? it says that new data will be pushed to iphone. does that mean that the emails will be stored on your iphone? why would i want this?

Push means that as soon as the email is received, you'll get a notification. Whereas with the fetch option, it checks for new emails every so many minutes, depending on your fetch settings. With push, you get a notice as soon as the email comes through. Fetch also uses a tad bit more battery since its constantly checking for new emails every so many minutes.

Thanks for the explantion, one question though. If an email was sent from Mr A to Mr B at 12:01, does the email go straight to Mr B`s phone instantly and then it is pushed to the screen and alerts Mr B so he gets it at 12:01

If Fetch is enabled and set to hourly (assuming its last check was 12:00) would Mr B only get the email at 13:01 ?

so surely push is the best option?

Sorry if thats a dumb question lol

Well, even with the push setting on, it still depends on the email accounts. For example, if you add your gmail using the "Gmail" option, it won't support push...only fetch or manual. However, if you add your gmail account using the "Microsoft Exchange" option, it'll give you the option to have it pushed. Go to the Advanced tab under "Fetch New Data" and you'll see which options are available for each of your email accounts. That's why I personally use Exchange for any of my emails, since I'd rather have the shit pushed to my devices.

---------- EDIT ----------

Yup, Mr B will get a notification about the email at 12:01 if push is enabled for that account. If fetch is enabled instead and setup for hourly, he would get notified at 13:01. However, he still receives the email at 12:01, just isn't notified about it. If he happened to open up the mail app at 12:05, he would then see the email

Just an FYI: You can setup your gmail accounts to use push. When adding a new email account, instead of selecting "Gmail" at the first screen, select "Microsoft Exchange" instead. Fill out your gmail email address, your username (which is the full gmail address), and your password then hit Next. Then another field for "Server" will show up...put "m.google.com" in there and hit done. Then you're all set and your gmail account will get pushed

In your case, you would delete the gmail accounts you already have and then just do as I described above

Cool. Always found it strange that Gmail didn't have the push option. Thanks for the tip
