Unlocking iphone 3GS?

Hi there guys..got some questions for u! Appoligies in advance if there has been a post regarding this...

Ok, got a iphone 3gs, its currently on O2 network, trying to open it to 3.

The firmware is 4.0.1 at the moment, trying to figure out wots the best way to go about this...

Would i be better updating to 5.1.1 then unlocking or wotever..?

Any help and guideance will be appricated!

update to 5.1.1
once that is done download the latest redsnow from the front page
open redsnow and select jailbreak
when given the option select downgrade from ipad baseband beware you may need to do some more research some 3gs can not go to and from the ipad bb depending on the week and year of your 3 gs
once you have downgraded your bb install ultrasnow from cydia

how would i find out the week and year of the iphone?

Do not worry about that

Make a custom firmware with redsn0w
After that put your device into pwned DFU
Restore to the custom firmware
Activate
Jailbreak
Install ultrasn0w

Bamn! Unlocked!

Ask O2 to unlock it for you. It is FREE if you are on O2 mate.

Are you on pay as you go?
Contract is FREE.

as Cooldayr said just make a custom 5.1.1 firmware with redsnow to preserve your unlockable bb
then unlock with ultrasnow from cydia

im not sure wot the iphone 3gs is, all i know is its locked to o2 and wont take a 3 simcard, my iphone 4 is on o2 contract, i take it that wont make a diff??

ok is it pretty simple to make a custom fireware etc ive just heard doing this makes the phone go into brick mode sometimes...would need a total step by step guide on how to do it lol

Anyway if it is on Contract then Definitely O2 will unlock it for you for Free but You might have to pay for PAYG.

If it is on PAYG then create a custom no baseband 5.1.1 firmware with Redsn0w and update your phone via iTunes in PwnDFU Mode.

Jailbreak and install Ultrasn0w.

everytime i download the firmware it keeps coming up with a bunch of files...not like it used to...:S

i download it then extract it, when i do theres lots of diff files...:s

try using a different browser to download internet explorer does that i think
you are obviously getting a zip file, before you download it again just try renaming the file to .ipsw

ok manged to create the custom firmware, correct me if im wrong, these are the steps i intend to take, as you guys have stated..

Put phone into dfu mode..using itunes restore using the custom firmware with no bb
Activate? that part im unsure of...
Jailbreak using absinthe
then install ultrasnow for the unlock??

If you don't have a sim that the phone is locked to you will need to HACKTIVATE by jailbreaking with redsnow is all that means
