how assistive touch can be initiated in iphone 3g ios 4.2.1

while we're waiting for someone to reply, can you explain what assistive touch is? First time i've heard of something like that

Assistive touch is a feature that allows the iPhone to be more “physically challenged” friendly. Like if a person has mobility problems, you can limit the number of clicks/touches to one so the user can easily access the said app/selection. This is also helpful for hard of hearing users because I think there’s also an option for high quality audio under this feature.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this is only available on iOs 5.

I doubt it if this version of 3g have one

Allot of people do enable this feature so they would not use the home button regularly.

In ios 5 it could be turned on by going to:
Settings -> General -> Accessibility. Scroll down to find the “AssistiveTouch” option. Tap on it and set the “AssistiveTouch” option to ON. Once you activate the option, you’ll find a transparent button at the lower-right corner of the screen. Tap on it to bring the touch menu, Then you’ll see the “Home” button option that provides the same function as the physical home button.

iOS AssistiveTouch turns out to be a useful feature that proves pretty handy when any of your device’s hardware buttons stops functioning. It’s not a permanent solution but it may be super helpful in any of the following cases:

■Fix broken iPhone Home button, if it’s not functioning properly – Think you need a hammer to press the Home button so it works? Instead, use the onscreen home button till you get it fixed.
■iPad / iPhone Volume up/down button broken / not working?
■Mute button broken or not functioning properly.
■Having trouble performing gestures.
■iPad / iPhone Power button broken or not working – In AssistiveTouch, tap on the Device and then tap & hold “Lock Screen” option. The “Slide to Power off” option will appear soon.

Ok. very informative. I have been putting off getting iOS 5 for my ipod touch for a while now, so I was not aware of such a feature. I'm afraid of my device actually slowing down if I upgrade a 3rd generation ipod touch to a 5th generation OS.
