Enable Numeric signal/wifi strength (no jailbreak needed!)

Ok so for starters you will need a program called iBackupBot on your computer
Here is the link: iBackupBot - iTunes Backup Manager for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad

So this mod will change signal bars and/or Wifi bars to a numeric value
For cell signal this value will range from -47 (the best service) to -130 (the worst service), The actual bar value for bars will vary from carrier to carrier.
For Wifi it will range from 0 (perfect connection) to -100 (weak as possible)

Step 1: Back up your phone to your computer (if you use iCloud then just turn of iCloud backup and sync)
Step 2: Open iBackupBot and find your backup (there may be a lot)
Step 3: Find the file called Library/Preferences/com.apple.springboard.plist
Step 4: open the file
Step 5: Look at the image below, for numeric signal add the SBShowGSMRSSI line with the true value and for Wifi add the SBShowRSSI line and the true value

Step 6: Save the file
Step 7: Press the little iPhone with an arrow in iBackupBot to restore your phnoe from a back up
Step 8: Enjoy!

To switch between the analog bars and the numeric values just tap them!

Thanks for the tweak but its much easier to use sbsettings and toggle the numerical wifi on
with the same effect.

How're you gonna do that with out a jailbreak? I'm pretty sure you can't use sbsettings without your phone being jailbroken. This method is for someone without a jailbreak.

True but this is a non-jailbreak method
Also SBsettings consumes a shit ton of RAM

For those users who care about a shit ton of RAM and want their device to run smooth then this is the way to go!

Looks just like what I was looking for!
But I'm guessing (as a novice) that my 3GS with iOS 4.3.2 is NOT capable of this work around.
I downloaded iBackupBot but haven't played with it yet (I didn't buy, so I only have 7 days).

I hesitate to jailbreak the phone, since I really don't have time to muck around if I make a mistake.
If this solution won't work for me, can you point me to your favorite step-by-step tutorial on JB?
Should I upgrade to 5.1.1 first?

Any SIMPLE wifi signal strength (RSSI) solution is all I'm trying to accomplish. Suggestions?

I suggest trying OPs tutorial and see if you can even do it or not before upgrading.

Thanks. By 'OPs tutorial' I assume you mean cooldayr's post at the beginning of THIS THREAD?

I opened iBackupBot & opened the (only) backup I had for my iPhone.
I found ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.springboard.plist and used the editor to add the last 4 lines (exactly as highlighted above). Then
Saved the changes using the 'floppy' icon (leftmost) in the editor window.

At this point I'm unclear on cooldayr's steps 6 & 7. I don't see his 'little iPhone with an arrow' but also don't have the phone connected. Am I supposed to plug it in & do a Restore from WITHIN the editor? I tried closing the editor after saving, but when I looked at the 'Backup' listed in the iBackupBot list, it didn't show the changes to the plist(?) Did the changes get exported to the 'Backup' on my MacBook [~Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backup/folder]?

It looks like that folder was 'modified' about the time I saved the plist. I'm just not clear if I needed to export the edited plist... or if I do the restore from within iBackupBot???

Thanks for any help to a n00b!

I've used this program once before. Basically just open the file add the lines and save it (floppy) then restore to the modified backup.

Step 6 means to save it (floppy) and step 7 means to push the button on the left of
the question mark, see below:

You restore in the program it's kind of strange but it works without jailbreak.

I did it long ago on my iPad 2 when I couldn't jailbreak it. I enabled the multitasking gestures back on iOS 4 but now I'm jailbroke on iOS 5.0.1 so

OK... so having nothing but time to lose, I went ahead & made the ass-umption that the SW did what it was supposed to. With iTunes CLOSED, I plugged in the iPhone (no change to iBackupBot) and then did a restore from iTunes. It worked fine... just as advertised!

I have to confess that I COMPLETELY missed the 'little iPhone with an arrow' on the first go round.... feel like a dumbass. Good to know that you can do a restore from either iTunes or iBB.

---------- EDIT ----------

Thanks! I appreciate the reply, Ben. Quick question- you said you used this SW once before, but did you buy it?

Doesn't seem to work on iOS 6.0.1

Thank you. I wanted to do this without using sbsettings as it takes too much ram. iFile works just as well to edit the plist which is what I did (My device is already jailbroken though).
