Apple ‘to drop iPhone 3GS’
Apple ‘to drop iPhone 3GS’
iPhone 4 will become the UK's entry level iPhone after Apple’s announcement on 12 September, while iPhone 5 will require new ‘nano’ sim cards.
The new update is likely to see an 8GB version of the iPhone 4 introduced and probably given away free on £20 per month contracts, as the 3GS is currently. Sources close to retailers also suggested that an 8GB version of the 4S could be introduced.
The 3GS was launched in June 2009 and sold a million units over its first weekend alone. At more than three years old, however, it is no longer able to keep track with the latest features, such as voice assitant Siri.
Three versions of the Apple iPhone 5 will be on sale, offering different storage options. Details of whether the iPhone 5 will also offer full 4G capabilities, allowing it to use 4G networks launching in Britain later this year on the Orange and T-Mobile networks, remain unclear however.
The sources close to retailers added that the device is expected to go on sale in the week of the 21 September, as previously suggested.
The iPhone 5 will also be one of a new generation of phones, including the Nokia Lumia 820 and 920 announced yesterday, that will use a new, 40 per cent smaller nano sim. The sim card will require existing users to change their current sim when they upgrade. As with the process for changing to the current micro sim, consumers will be able to swap their existing sims over the counter in mobile networks shops and in phone retailers.

Or maybe the 3GS will be pushed into the Pre-Paid market of which Apple isn't a player yet.

You might be right. But I think most like they will only drop it as their main phones and sell it for less in another market. IOS 6 is also offered for the 3Gs so it would make sense they sell it cheap and jump into the pre-paid market as well.

Thats going to suck while in Europe and trying to pickup a nano payg sim, currently its pretty easy as long as I carry my sim cutter with me to convert a standard sim into a micro sim

3GS is being dropped because it cannot keep up with the one of the features Siri ? WTF??
thats irreverent, because iPhone 4 even tho its capable of having the feature Siri, Apple never put it on iphone 4 until 4S, but they not droppin the iphone 4 no time soon so whats the big deal ?

OK, it totaly makes sense that the 3GS can't cope with the new advances, like new powerful games, graphics for retina, memory hog apps and tweaks, 3D maps and a lot of other stuff, but here's my question: Why is Crapple beta testing iOS6 on it as well if it's to be dropped? I really wonder
Another question: Would you drop your old bootrom 3GS (with all blobs saved) when you have a +80% of the appstore apps working great and a +90% of Cydia tweaks that make it a phone that's in the "Top 10" atm? I wouldn't.
I would also get a 4S 8 Gb at least (since I can't afford a 5, or even a 32Gb 4S), to keep up with the tech advances.
That's just me tho, IMHO. Cheers
