ATT Just added a data plan by force

I have been grandfathered into the unlimited data plan with ATT for regular phone from about 5 years ago and using an unlocked iPhone but today I woke to find that they have sent me a text stating "A data plan is required for your iPhone" We have just added an appropriate one!!!

Anyone else experience this? I don't want to loose the unlimited.

if i were you.. i'd demand they take off the plan! Im not sure about in the US but in the UK if a company changes something without asking when you've signed a contract then they can be in alot of trouble. We can go to trading standards and the company can get charged thousands

I'm assuming you are not under contract? AT&T terms of use stated they can change your plan without notice.

I'm not sure why they changed you from an unlimited data plan to another Plan. Are you sure the other plan is not unlimited? Such as a Pdanet plan to a smartphone plan? I know AT&T had two different plans back in the day.

We had 2 iPhone with no data that was placed on a data plan last year by force. Knew it wouldn't last lol. I also have 2 phones with the unlimited iPhone plan that's still on it.

The question you need to ask is "Were you caught tethering?"

Sorry to tell you my friend, but once they change your data plan to their tiered subscription there's no going back. My guess is before that they sent you a text or two about tethering or going over 3gb a month.

Sorry to break it to you, but chances are that the contract you signed with AT&T five years said something along the lines of:

I don't think that there is anything you can do about it but bite the bullet. Even so, it would not hurt to give them a call and see if they might reverse it. I would not get your hopes up, though.

I never did any tethering - I am going to call them today, I found an old style phone and I have my sim in it at the minute.

I'll let you know how it goes.

after seeing a lot threads with the same thing happening i started to check my bill. im on a family plan as the main account with grandfathered data unlimited. i have added 3 other lines for my wife, sister and brother in law. anyway yeah i saw my wife had .94mb of 3gb data use. but i never got here a data plan. when i asked her she noticed she recvd a text msg from ATT saying something like "we detected you are using an iphone which requires a data plan and have added tr appropriate one for you". i at leasttried to change it to the cheaper 300mb a month. but cant since it does include the required international crap. geez, now thinking of moving to a different provider. its too much. im paying $250 a month.. need a better alternative
hit THANKS or you..

I talked to a Verizon and AT&T agent in store one day. They both explained that if it's jail broken they have no way to trace if your using the tethered feature or tweak from Cydia. They say it's like having a ghost phone.

Hmm...How long has she been using the iphone?...Its always been AT&T's policy that you "must" have an iphone data plan to use an iphone with them. They can tell you have an iphone from your IMEI number. You can usually play the cat and mouse game with them by putting your sim back in a standard phone, call and tell them your not using an iphone so please remove the new data plan etc., BUT they will continue to add it and eventually thwy will say no, you "must" have the data plan to use the iphone.

You could always try another carrier that still uses AT&T's towers, ie. Straightalk etc., without any of these issues.

They did that to one of my lines that had the Grandfather plan and I got them to switch it back. Just tell them you have no idea what the hell is going on with your account and you never authorized any change. If they say you're tethering just keep saying you don't know wtf is that.

Wrong. Straight Talk is AT&T, as well as T-Mobile. Is uses GSM bands instead of CDMA (CDMA would be Verizon).

As stated above they know your phone by IMEI. also they did have a PDA data plan back in the day that was unlimited but it was not the same as iphone data plan. as soon as your iphone pinged their system they had all they needed to change your data plan to the current iphone plan.

Well - I had my non-smart phone in all day and then called them tonight when I got home from work, explained for some reason I had been put on an iPhone data plan according to a text message I received yesterday morning. My wife has an iPhone in this account, infact she is the account holder, so he went away and came back telling me it was some mistake due to her upgrading to the iPhone 5 (which she didn't) so he apologized and not only restored me to the Unlimited but gave me a $25 credit to take care of the charge that I will see appearing on my bill! :-)

Happy Days

One thing I did notice that might have triggered this is that I had used 305000 kb of data last month.

Seriously and you believe that, thats like talking to the lowest person on the pole LOL, they do not work in programming dept nor have access to the upper level techs also for whats its worth a friend of mine is the manager at ATT and he explains they do have ways its not 100% but they can tell to some extent. They could care less if its jailbroken or not all they care about is if you are paying for a tethering plan.
