I purchased the iPhone 5 from ebay. i unlocked the phone with my t mobile sim card. i have service but i cant get into the home screen until the person who sold me the phone gives me their zip code and last four digits of social, but they are refusing to do so. please help what can i do? how do i fix this? i've tried to restore alrdy via itunes and nothing.

Start a Paypal dispute. They will get you a refund if the item is not useable.

Someone else mentioned this problem in another thread. How much did you pay for the phone?

I'm not sure but it might be a subsidized phone, ie a phone obtained by upgrading/starting a 2 year contract. Maybe the phone has to be authorized by the contract purchaser? IDK but maybe it needs to be activated with the original nano sim and the upgraded linked AT&T account?

Could always ask a genius bar guy.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yes it's everything you said. The person doesn't want to give me the info so they won't get charged on their account for activating it cause its an upgrade.mso I guess I will have to do a refund. Sucks., I paid $700. I went to apple & they refused to help me. Lol word up @Dj I opened up the PayPal dispute before I even asked here but I was trying to find sometype of way to get it working until the decision is made. Or it's a wrap.

@rob I tried to restore from iTunes 3 times alrdy with the original sim card that came with it with no sim card and with my sim card. The same outcome. It's like the phone itself is locked and not the simcard.

You could make him pay for a Factory Unlock for you. There are many services on ebay that will do it for like 50 bucks or less.

Well this phone is under warranty and is with status 10 mean next Activation with sim iphone become unlocked ! No need to buy unlock !
Did you put right cutted micro SIM ? Because it must unlock .
Check this sim with another iphone 5 , or take a work sim from another iphone 5.
If can't activate then you must go to any Official Apple Service at your location and ask them for help !

They must provide you service for free because phone is under warranty .

Thanks Testings. In the picture u can see the edge symbol but i cant get passed the activation scree so that i can use the phone.. i went to apple and they did not want to help me because i did not buy it from them and i bought it from ebay. I may have to try and write to them.

Look , did you read with atention what i write above ?

I repeat again : your phone must be connected to internet through wi-fi or to PC with Itunes .

To activate it you must insert RIGHT CUTED SIM !!! Problem can be in your sim .

Your iphone status is unlocked so don't write to apple because they maybe not help you .

i suggest you to buy a simple microsim or normal sim and cut it with attention (will be better if you take micro-sim which already work with another iPhone 5 )!!! - don't forget to remove PIN lock from sim !

When all be like in my description and you will be connected to internet .
And sim card will be on phone and you receive message like in your second screen.

try using WI-FI , or try use PC connection through itunes !
Don't USE OVER CELLULAR !!!

Maybe problem is in unlock source . Some guy's required before unlock that phone must be activated with original sim card from at&t , i use source which don't require any activation !!! and succesfull unlocked 8 iPhone 5 from AT&T .
After bought Unlock don't try AT&T SIM !!!

how do i remove pin lock? and that what i did. i got my micro sim card from my iphone 4s professionally cut with the nano clipper. when i put it into my iphone 5 after unlocking it i saw the edge symbol which meant i can use tmobile now that it was unlocked but itunes and the phone would still not allow me to leave the activation screen without inputting the zip code and last 4 of social. than i had to buy a new mico sim card to use my iphone 4s until i can get out of this activation screen on my iphone 5 to then re activate a new nano tmobile sim card that i have for when my iphone 5 is finally in the home screen and ready for use

I hope it works out for you but I don't think it will without the original owners info.

I just upgraded one of my lines to the iP5 and picked it up at the Apple store. I asked if I could activate it later (so i could continue to use my JB'n iP4) and he said "no", I must do it right then while in the store. He scanned the bar code on the box (which I assume registers the subsidized sim inside the phone) and then he verified my identity (drivers license) & I signed his mobile PDA which essentially agreed to the new contract terms. Only then would he open up the box.

Since this phone was most likely received in the mail, I think this account verification step is for a few reasons. (1) to confirm/verify that the persons identity who ordered the phone and also that they agree to the terms of the new contract before the phone can be used. (2) to have a new start day timestamp for the new 2 yr. contract since theoretically you could get the phone in the mail but never activate it. (3) to help deter people from trying to make money off subsidized phones by simply flipping them as a brand new sealed phones. This way you have to open the box up and most people want a new item to be sealed.

I hope I'm wrong though. Good luck.

On another note...just buy a nano sim card adapter (or make one) so you can easily switch your sims between phones. You can use the same sim in all your phones instead of continuing to buy/cut/activate new ones.

oh snap i didnt know that about the sim card adapter.. and yeah that why shes reluctant to give me the info she doesn't want to get charged $200 and be obligated to another 2 years. i guess all i can do is wait for a jailbreak for now. now i know for next time that the phone has to activated first if its an upgrade under contract to at least be able to use it after unlocking the IMEI #

I dont think youre understanding me correctly. I believe the IMEI is "blocked" not locked. Locked vs unlocked would be referring to a specific carrier, while what im saying is that the phone is blocked from using on ANY carrier, including AT&T until it it authorized for use. Its basiclally like a stolen phone since AT&T still owns it if she didnt agree to the new contract terms. She already paid the $200 to receive the phone but the $400 discount she got off full price is contingent upon signing/agreeing to the new contract which she obviously hasent done.

The other poster mentioned that it's unlocked so she probably paid $15-$25 on eBay to have it unlocked.

The phone is useless if it's blocked so I would definitely return it/start a paypal dispute ASAP.
