DOWNGRADE TO iOS 5.1.1 FROM iOS 6 (UPDATE 2/16/2013)

Hello, after I struggled to downgrade back to 5.1.1 after updating, out of boredom, to iOS 6, I finally managed to get it done. I searched a lot for a guide but I couldn't find any working one, I mean, nothing worked. So, with some previous experience in downgrading problems, I managed to get the job done and now, I'm gonna share the thing because I know how this process can be a pain in the ass. So, here's the deal. Follow the instructions carefully otherwise you'll fail.

WARNING !
Before doing anything, if you don't have your SHSH blobs saved, you can just stop reading and go cry because there is nothing left to do. You could do a downgrade without blobs but it would be a tethered one and it's crappy, complicated and it doesn't worth.

REQUIREMENTS
- sn0wbreeze 2.9.5
- iREB r5
- original .ipsw firmware (plenty of sites to download)

I cannot post links since I'm not registered for atleast 7 days but you can find anything via Google. Just search for the names I provided and you'll find and download them easily.

Before you start doing anything, make sure you navigate to "C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/Etc" and open the "hosts" file. Inside, add this below the last line and save the file next.

74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Good, asuming that you already downloaded the stock .ipsw firmware, we may proceeed.

First, you open sn0wbreeze, select the stock firmware, select the iFaith option, browse and stitch the corresponding blob. After that you just hit the "Build IPSW" option and wait for the sn0wbreeze to complete the process.

Once sn0wbreeze it's done, you'll find your custom firmware on your desktop.

Open iREB and follow the instructions on how to get your device into PWNED DFU Mode. Once you're done putting your device into PDFU Mode, open iTunes. It will give you a warning like "iDevice detected in the Recovery Mode, you must do a restore" or something like that. It's all good until now. Press OK and you should see a button labeled "RESTORE".
While pressing the SHIFT key on your keyboard, click the button labeled "RESTORE" and point it to the new custom firmware you created with sn0wbreeze (it should be located on your desktop).

Wait for the process to finish, let iTunes do the job. Once done, you might get some error like "iTunes detected the iDevice but it can't recognize it". It's because it's not synced with iTunes, hasn't a name, stuff like that. Leave it, it will work perfect once you finish setting up your iDevice (first screen setup).

Note: I have tried many times to stitch the blobs with redsn0w to a stock firmware and attempt a restore but everytime, iTunes threw me an error.
This guide was tested with an iPhone 4 GSM, factory unlocked.

UPDATE 2/16/2013

This guide still works for iOS 6.1. I'll write a guide for those who have lost or didn't saved their SHSH blobs with TinyUmbrella.

ATTENTION! This guide will take some amount of time but if you want to go back to 5.1.1 follow this. It works 100%, I've tested myself with my iPhone 4 GSM. Follow my instructions exactly and you won't fail.

REQUIREMENTS

- if you're on iOS 6, just jailbreak with evasi0n
- last version of iTunes (yes, it still works even with the last version of iTunes)
- iSHSHit via Cydia
- last version of sn0wbreeze
- original iOS .ipsw (Build 9B206)

After you got all the things that you require, begin the process of jailbreaking your iDevice and after all it's done, download iSHSHit from Cydia. If you're device is already jailbroken, just skip this step (obviously you won't need to jailbreak it again) and download iSHSHit from Cydia.

After you downloaded iSHSHit, launch the app and select your device model and the firmware you want to download the SHSH blobs for.
Note: This downloads the SHSH blobs from Cydia (every jailbroken device has its blobs saved on Cydia).
When it finishes the download process, send them to your email and download them in your PC. If you have troubles downloading the blobs or using iSHSHit, I'm pretty sure we have a tutorial around here or you can just Google "iSHSHit tutorial" and you'll get plenty of tutorials.

Good, now we have the SHSH blobs saved in our PC, sn0wbreeze downloaded and we have the original .ipsw firmware (Build 9B206) (I'm saying to download the Build 9B206 because I've downloaded Build 9B208, tried to stitch my blobs to it and it didn't worked, so I've downloaded Build 9B206, and for that, it worked. I have no idea why for B9B208 it didn't but the difference between Build 9B206 and 9B208 isn't affecting the end user as far as I read over the web so don't worry about it. You could download both firmwares and try to stitch the blobs on every one of them but you'll just lose time).

Alright, now run sn0wbreeze, select the firmware, select the iFaith option, stitch the blobs to the firmware, select the Build IPSW option and wait until sn0wbreeze finishes the process. After sn0wbreeze created the custom .ipsw firmware, go to "C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/Etc" and open the "hosts" file and remove everything below "127.0.0.1 localhost" and add "74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com".

Okay, now, open iTunes, connect the iDevice and hit the "Restore" button while having the "Shift" key pressed (it will open a "Browse" window where you'll need to point it at the new sn0wbreeze created firmware. Point it to that, hit OK and wait for the process to finish. As far as I know, you won't get any errors, the process will run fine.

You're done now, enjoy your fresh 5.1.1. OTA is disabled also, you won't get any notifications for the new firmwares.

Note: I've written this second tutorial because I've formatted my PC, lost my saved blobs (was dumb enough to not think about them) and then I needed a way to go back to 5.1.1. I've found this iSHSHit way and it worked damn fine.

Nope, you can downgrade it, tutorials are around here but the jailbreak will be tethered so if you'll reboot your device, you'll have to connect the device to the PC before it's gonna boot.

OMG. I can't even explain how thankful I am for your post.
I tried redsn0w for about 8 straight hours looking for solutions to the errors I was getting.

Tried snowbreeze and had it all done in about 15 minutes.
Thanks SO much man.

Guide still works for iOS 6.1 (last iTunes version also).
I've added a guide for those who didn't saved their blobs with TinyUmbrella.

I used ifaith 1.4.2 to save blobs from firmware 4.4.4 but when i created the custom firmware for 4.4.4 itunes gave error 1604 then 1600. I updated to 5.2.1 then tried the tethered jail break and it works but i still cannot downgrade to 4.4.4

Hi mates,
Sorry for interrupting, I posted aweek ago about my downgrade and upgrade ios for ip4.
Yes you can downgrade without shsh blobs saved, and you can upgrade to any non recent ios version too but you need only a shsh blobs file for that ipsw(does not matter for what ip4)
at the end you will get a tethered jailbreak (there is no untetherd jailbreak in this case)
who like the tetherd jailbreak they can go for it without fear, and who's not!!! they should stay where they are now until a miracle comes and a new jailbreak released.
Good work chronix and we all support your tuto
