iPhone 4S RE-restore WARNING!!!
Warning to those planning to RE-restore their 4S'es on 5.1.1 (on Straight Talk carriers)
Doing so will UPDATE your phone's baseband to the latest version and in my experience doing this, the baseband upgrade has crippled my 3G connection through Straight Talk... it's generally on Edge connection now and if I turn airplane mode on/off the 4G icon comes back, but moments later will return back to Edge...
EDIT: Installing TetherMe tweak via cydia fixes the problem for the most part but will still revert back to Edge at times, plus Straight Talk still throttles the shit out of their data... ANY STRAIGHT TALK USERS NOT EXPERIENCING DATA THROTTLE FEEL FREE TO POST THEIR SITUATION
I should have known better but oh well... I'm switching over to T-mobile's 500 minutes voice + unlimited text + TRUE unlimited data = $60/month seeing how they've upgraded their networks to work on 3G for iDevices now...
It was fun Straight Talk... until you had to throttle everybody's 3G and this baseband update debacle has pushed me over the edge (no pun intended)...

24 Months with T-Mobile plan = $1450

My 3G data no longer works with Straight Talk carrier after RE-restoring 5.1.1 on the 4S...
I'm stuck on EDGE connection and have tried enabling/disabling airplane mode to "fix" but no go...
I've RE-restored twice now... first time with Redsn0w beta1 and then beta2 and still no 3G connection (installed APN changer profile & messed around with settings)
If anybody has a fix for this feel free to offer a solution here... but regardless I'm switching to T-Mobile due to Straight Talk throttling their data now (Most likely an AT&T root issue)

FYI, TMo hasn't fully rolled out the switch to 1900mhz.
It's only in selected areas and even then in very limited availability.

Hmmm. Iphones never had a 4G icon, always 3g, and iphone 5 only has NONE/EDGE/3G/LTE. Unless you had a tweak to change your 3g to a 4G status.
The 5.1.1 update has been out for months and never had this issue as well, best bet is to redo 5.1 ( if you have your blobs )or 5.1.1 . And leave phone stock and do a power off/wait 5 minutes and power on and see what happens.

He is not just on 5.1.1. He did a re-restore using latest redsnow which took his baseband to the newest version.
You would not have this issue unless you did the re-restore.

Starting with iOS5.1 the iPhones/Pads starting showing 4G icon where it used to be 3G... if you're on iOS4.x.x/5.0.1 then you would still have the 3G icon...
Upon installing TetherMe tweak via cydia, the 3G issue is "fixed" but sometimes etchy... and Straight Talk still throttles the shit out of their data now... either way I'm switching to T-Mobile
---------- EDIT ----------

Up until now they have been using different frequencies... T-mobile in my area is upgrading their towers to HSPA+ and other 3G frequencies which are iPhone 3G compatible next month so...

Yeah, I can definitely say that the 3G has been rolling out here in MN pretty well. I'll get it here and there more and more often than I used to

It depends on where you live. If you live in a big city then expect lower speeds. AT$T had a major outage almost a year ago in LA area. Signal was dropping like crazy and I thought that ST had blocked all iPhones back then. This may be the reason for your problem.

What if I never Jailbreaked my 4s yet? What is the proper procedure to Downgrade a io6 4s to 5.1.1? I have never tried to Jailbreak on my 4s yet but I want to do it now.

There is no procedure, cant be done.
You'll have to wait for a ios 6 jailbreak

Yeah I've experienced that too in my area in the past...
I'm 99% sure I'm gettin throttled because I'll try to stream ESPN thru my usual source (Skyfire, or via XBMC) and in the past it's streamed fine...
Last 3-4 months I get the stream going for about 10 seconds and then buffering, everytime... stream starts for another 10 seconds and then buffering again... not only that but my 3G speeds won't even "register" when running SpeedTest.net app (usually get 0mb/download & 1.5mb/upload)
Most android phones running T-Mobile runs on a DIFFERENT 3G frequency vs. the iPhones.... which to me means less iDevice users congesting their networks... and assuming what they've said is true about NEVER throttling and I get TRUE unlimited HSPA+ data... $60/month through them is the best deal out there if you don't mind the 2-YEAR CONTRACT

This happened to me when I restored my g.fs iPhone 4 to 5.1.1 back in June. It killed the 3G speed nasty style with straight talk. I was like wtf! Big mistake restoring. I though it was the baseband as well. I figured that older basebands get higher 3G speeds. But with time it went back to normal. Maybe there was AT&T 3G problems at the time. I did speedtest before I restored and I was getting 3 Mbps and after I restored like .14 Mbps I was super pissed.
