Jailbreak problem, need help

Okay, so I had a jailbroken iphone 3G with 3.1.3. I decided to upgrade to 4.2.1 but now things dont seem like I actually upgraded. Was there something I was supposed to do before I upgraded my jailbroken 3.1.3? If so, what can I do now to fix it?? I dont have a background option for behind my apps, no spotlight option. Settings confirms Version 4.2.1 (8C148) with Modem Firmware 05.15.04. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

i have tried with redsnow and greenpoison but nothing has worked. It seems like some of it is 4.2.1 and some of it is 3.1.3. Is it possible something from Cydia or Spirit (what I used to jailbreak 3.1.3) is interfering?

Clean restore to 4.2.1 again. Let iTunes download the firmware for you. Set up as new device. Use Redsnow to jailbreak again.
