Unlocking In-Contract iPhone with AT&T - Possible? (in this case..)

I bought an iPhone 4 off a guy on eBay. The iPhone 4 is still in contract. But the owner of the iPhone upgraded to a iPhone 4S under AT&T. The account is also in perfect standing.

My question is will AT&T unlock the iPhone 4 since the owner upgraded to iPhone 4S, even though the iPhone 4 is still under contract?

I though that they would since th owner upgraded to iPhone 4S, but an AT&T representative said no.

Can anyone confirm this? (or refute it) from personnel experience.

The phone can be unlocked if it is not reported lost or stolen,but AT$T probably won't do it for you if you are not a customer. I would try contacting the seller and ask him to call AT&T ( if it truly was his phone)for an unlock. Other wise you may have to pay an unlock service for a factory unlock. Before you do that (unlock service)ask for a lost or stolen check first. If for some reason it is reported lost or stolen a factory unlock will not be possible.

You can't . If it Is locked to Telus , AT&T can't unlock it. You should give Telus a call to see what they say .

here in canada, they don't allow unlocking iphones here...thats why we sell out iphones cheaper on a 3 yr contract
