5.1 to 5.1.1 upgrade safe with existing 5.1 tethered jb?

k i have a lazy side....as much as i love customizing the crap out of my idevices - i just dont feel like doing it all again for my daughter - lol - she is tethered on 5.1 which has been fine - but i made the mistake of telling her they came out with a new untethered one, now she wants it...i have read in a couple of places that to upgrade from 5.1 to 5.1.1 it will not kill the tethered 5.1 jb

can anyone confirm this before i move forward? thanking you in advance

ryan

read this mite help

just like Corona was, the ios5.1.1 guys dont need to re-jailbreak! it worked for me

"If you currently have an A4 device or below that’s jailbroken on iOS 5.1.1 using a tethered jailbreak, you can use the new Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether package to convert your tethered jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak.

This is great, because you don’t have to perform any sort of restore on your already jailbroken device just to change it into a jailbreak of the untethered variety. Even better is the fact that you can download Rocky Racoon from Cydia, and install it just like you would any other package to accomplish an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1."

Note: Your device must be jailbroken using RedSn0w for iOS 5.1.1 to perform a tethered jailbreak first. To do this, see our iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak tutorial for RedSn0w. If you’re not already jailbroken using RedSn0w, follow our Absinthe 2.0 tutorial instead.

Step 1: Open Cydia.

Step 2: Search for Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether and install.

Step 3: Reboot your device and verify that you can reboot without having to perform a tethered boot.

You could always restore your device, and perform a jailbreak using Absinthe 2.0, but there’s no need to do this since you can just use Rocky Racoon to convert your jailbreak over to untethered! A5 users (iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPad 3) will not be able to use this initially, because there was no tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 to begin with. A4 users (iPhone 4, iPhone 4S) and iPhone 3GS users should be able to take advantage of Rocky Racoon with no issues.

The jailbreak is only for iOS 5.1.1, not 5.1. He is on 5.1, so he would have to restore, update, and rejailbreak.

the OP is on 5.1 and NOT 5.1.1. If he run rocky raccoon on his existing 5.1....it might crash, forcing him to restore and lose his data.

Anyway, for you to enjoy the untethered jailbreak you will have to update to 5.1.1 then rejailbreak again.

By the same line, if I'm on a 5.0 untethered jb, do I have to restore to 5.1.1 and then rejailbreak?

ughh, hate losing all my apps and settings.

My iPhone is still 5.0. I see no need to update to 5.1 unless you need soo in japanese... Stick with 5.0 IMO

Thats not true at all but depending on what you idevice does then sometimes you have to do a clean restore then jb it. I had untethered 5.0.1 and updated thru iTunes by clicking the update button on my iphone 4 to 5.1.1. Then I did the tethered jb with redsn0w (newest one) and tether jb it and downloaded rocky racoon all without restoring my A4 iPhone I couldn't be happier
IF WHAT I SAY HELPS YOU MAKE SURE YOU CLICK THE THANKS BUTTON I WOULD DO THE SAME FOR YOU

That's where I'm at. 5.1 tethered but having a hard time wanting to restore and lose all just for untethered but being tethered has given me a few fits. When I have a little extra time, I will try what you did.

When I did mine I didn't lose that much and it was pretty quick too. Make sure to back up first just to cover yourself

Jailbroke a friends iPhone 4S yesterday. He was on 5.1 not jailbroken, did a OTA update to 5.1.1 and jailbroke with absinthe 2.0.2 with no dramas

So a restore is not always necessary.
