here are top 10 features..
1. Notification Center – Can swipe down form top to enter notifications on your iPhone. This is a much needed feature. Apple claims they have solved the notifications issue by directing all app notifications to the notifications center.

2. Newsstand – Newsstand will be your quick access to the Magazines and newspaper subscriptions on the iPhone and iPad.

3. Twitter Integration – The new iOS 5 will include built in Twitter support. This brings integration to camera, apps an more.

4. Safari – A new better Safari delivers a better browsing experience with tabs on the iPad and iPhone. Included in the new Safari are tabbed browsing, Reading list and Reader. These last two features will allow you to sync your reading list across browsers.

5. Reminders - iOS 5 includes a to do app that allows you to check off items you need to do. This will repalce all yoru scraps of paper, as well as a good number of third party apps. Sync to iCal and Outlook.

6. Better Camera – The new iOS 5 will bring faster camera access and will finally make the volume rocker activate the shutter. You can also pinch to zoom and set focus with a tap.

7. New Mail App - in OS 5, you can control indentation, draggable addresses, message flagging, search entire message, swipe to your inbox and more. Also, iPad will have a new portrait thumb typing system.

8. PC Free – With iOS 5, you won’t need to connect the iPhone or iPad to a PC or Mac, you will be welcomed with a new landing page and OTA software updates.

9. Game Center – Game Center gets an update that allows you to add photos, play friends of friends and recommended friends and recommended games. Game Center is Apple’s second stab at social networks. The OS now supports turn based games right in the OS.

10. iMessages – Messages comes to all iOS 5 devices. On the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users will be able to send messages, photos and videos to other iOS 5 apps.

Am I the only one not impressed? No widgets, no real changes to the core OS, no maps update, no update to that stupid dead weather icon, iOS 5 looks like iOS1.

And what will this whole cloud/OTA updates mean for jailbreaking??

I'm not overly impressed, but I didn't come in with an expectation of an complete overhaul of IOS.

Bear in mind they had to build this revision out to support 3GS so they couldn't get too radical with the build.

I saw what I expected; functionality tweaks and enhancements. Some stuff under the hood which we don't see which clearly will make way for IOS 5.1 - 5.2

I expect the big overhaul with IOS6. They're designing this in mind for dual core devices with much more RAM and a bigger screen.

Considering jailbreaking, I dont think itunes has been completely ruled out. Wouldnt explain how to restore if ur phone goes into restore mode, not alone dfu mode. Am sure they havent ruled that out.

Yes. But now they will be officially supported and developed by Apple which means better overall integration and support.
An IOS update for instance won't render the app / tweak useless until the developer figures out a new workaround or update.

I'm sure just like Itunes, you will have the ability to ignore the update if you want.

What I'm worried about is the person with a limited data plan who accidentally begins the update over their data network.

They're going to be in for a surprise when their bill comes in.

It wouldn't work like that. If you had an iPod, say, and it prompted you for an update, you could blacklist the Apple Update Server IP on your wireless router and prevent those updates except from your computer.

i have been on mac os for 20 years, and the update has always been an option. as in we didn't have to take it. but I feel them trying to kill the jailbreak community some way or another. So I am not going to put it past apple to try and automatically patch yo shit or unjailbreak us. I am going to wait to upgrade regardless. I think my jailbroken ios 4.1 can do more than not jailbroken ios 5
