Question about updating used iPhone to 5.1.1

What's up everyone. I have an iPhone 4s that I bought off of a friend and it's jailbroken.

Now that the JB for 5.1.1 is about to drop I just had a question about the safest way to update. The reason I'm asking is because from the first time I had this phone it was already JB. I never had a clean backup to restore too.

Can I just download 5.1.1 and then update or do I need to do something special.

Sorry if this is a super-noob question, I just don't wanna brick anything.

You need a CLEAN RESTORE. Sorry but thats the only way to update a jb phone.

Promise me, if you see any button that looks like this: anywhere. Hit it for all of us!

So are you saying since I bought this iPhone used and never set it up with my iTunes account originally I'm screwed??

i did have an iphone a few months back that was originally backed up via my itunes account. Would that make a difference if I did a restore??

If you're jailbroken and you update it'll screw it up.
It doesn't matter that it was used, it is because you are already jailbroken.
The only way to update a jailbroken device is to restore, update, rejailbreak.

I plugged the phone into my laptop and right clicked on the iphone in itunes. There were 6 or so backups I can select to restore too.

Can I just use one of those in order to do the restore? All of them would have been from a 5.0.1 phone.

Go to iTunes and click the button that says "restore" right after update, then after it does that, restore from your backup. Doing that will restore/ update it, then the backup will put everything on it.
