why can i not send smileys that can be seen by other phones? I've downloaded some keyboards and installed but when i send them to people who are not on an iPhone they just show up as empty squares?

Because they don't have the emojis installed on their phones(and probably can't).
That's the only reason they show up as squares.

but this only happens with iPhones? when I've had nokia or android phones they just work no matter who sends them to you or who you send them to it only seems to be iPhones that have all these weird quirks?

Thats because emojis are not text like '' but they are symbols.Text is converted to their native smileys.Say i send a '' to an android,i get to see the emoji smiley,but the android sees it like a android robot smiling.
