Icon9 Need Help Updating IPhone 4

Update:
posted again below with new problems!
Please read and help if you can?

Sorry, I haven't been here in a while (or online much for that matter) but I could use some help and this site always seemed to be the most helpful.
I am trying to update my iPhone 4 and hopefully keep it jailbroken or easily jailbreak it again if possible. I haven't updated in a while. I am still running 4.0.1 And need to know the quickest way to update and RE-jailbreak again.

First of all, is there a jailbreak out for the current iPhone 4 update? Or do I need to update to a different version instead of what iTunes will automatically do?

Next, do I need to perform additional updates to save
everything and restore or can I just backup on iTunes and restore from that? (I have a couple .ipa files downloaded from installous...etc..).
Also, do I need to back up the shsh files like last time with tiny umbrella or something like that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have never been untethered either so I'm not sure what that is.
Thank you in advance!

first of all, are you relying on an unlock? if not you can update normally, if you are relying on the unlock (1.59 bb) you need to make a custom ipsw via redsn0w. the current 5.1.1 out right now is jailbreakable so you should do it before apple releases something new.

if you want to back up your ipa files from installous plug in your phone into itunes, go to file, and transfer purchases. i would transfer your apps then do a backup just in case. then when you update you can restore from the backup and for some reason if your apps didnt backup you can retrieve them from when you did the transfer purchases step. and always keep shsh files for whatever iOS there is for your phone.
Current Devices:
Factory Unlocked iPhone 5 on 6.0.2 running on T-Mobile
iPad 4 on 6.0.1

Past Devices:
Factory Unlocked iPhone 4S on 5.1.1
Factory Unlocked iPhone 4 on 5.1.1
iPad 3 on 5.1.1

If I have helped, please press the thanks button.

Thank you so much!
I don't need to unlock it...I'm still using AT&T for now but will not be unlocking anyway.
So if I backup on iTunes then I restore it AFTER I jailbreak again, correct?
Any help on where I can obtain the jailbreak or is that not allowed to be said here?

Also, can I do the same thing for my iPod Touch 4 also? I mean is the jailbreak the same?
My iPod has never been jailbroken yet.
Thanks so much!

Ahhh Okay thank you!
I guess I probably should've looked around a bit more before asking that LOL!
I appreciate the help anyway.
I guess I will go read about which one is better now ;-)

Thanks again!

Okay I'm probably bordering on annoying now but here goes hopefully my last question on this.

I just want to make sure I'm doing it in the right order.

1. I backup my entire iPhone on iTunes
2. I erase everything by going to Settings – General – Reset – Erase all
according to Absinthe 2.0 thread since that's what I decided to use.
3. Now I update Apple iPhone system firmware? Right?

4. Then click jailbreak with Absinthe 2.0

5. Then click on restore from backup I just made on iTunes

6. And anything extra like CYDIA stuff.

Is this correct? I apologize for being so clueless. I don't really do backups and jailbreaking unless I have to so I'm always forgetting how to do everything.

Thank you so much for all the help though!

I am using windows XP if that matters.

How to backup your Cydia Apps manually - SiNfuL iPhone

With mobile terminal etc... and hopefully see how that works. If not, I guess I will be manually fixing a lot of CYDIA stuff LOL...

Okay I hope somebody reads this because I guess it seemed like this thread was pretty much finished but unfortunately I ran into a
problem and didn't think I should make a brand-new thread. Unless nobody reads this I suppose?

Okay so I went to erase my iPhone and it seemed like it was working but then my iPhone would not start up. It just shows the white apple ,,,it occasionally disappears for a moment but then just comes back and lingers, never actually loading all the way To Start up...

I tried to restart it but it just keeps doing that same thing.
I am REALLY hoping this is not something that bad and can be fixed easily?

I did back up my iPhone right before this so I'm hoping that means all my stuff is still safe but who knows.

Can anybody tell me how to get out of this loop and possibly restore my iPhone?

Please Please Please?!?

connect the iphone to your computer and start itunes and try to restore it.

if it keeps looping put the phone in DFU mode

hold the home button and the power button for 20 seconds until it restarts

this is important

let go as soon as the apple logo comes up.

hold the power button and home button for 10 seconds

release the power button and keep holding the home button until the screen is black and the computer should detect it in recovery mode.

then restore

this should give you a fresh start.

jailbreak and DONT restore from backup but start as new
if you find my post helpful please give me a thanks so i can have access to the siri server here id appreciate it :thumb:

You need to use the Dfu mode = Device firmware upgrade mode.

You cant restore from recovery mode as you seen already.

The important thing is to get into dfu mode.

I did get it into DFU mode, and it did allow more of a restore process to go on but still gave me errors in the end.
However, now they are new errors. 1603, 1602, 1601

This is so frustrating.

Thanks so much for everyone's help though,,,I really appreciate it

Those are the best ones of all errors .
Use iREB-r5.exe to get arround or better prevent any 16XX error ,follow the instructions of that tool and start it in admin mode dats vital.

Head up were gonna get this bitch , youre not the first and not the last one who faces these obsticles.

And a good tip of mine is if you have a pc that can handle win 7 , upgrade ! Now!

It is way more convinient if you need drivers and stuff ,windows downloads automaticly the needed software and installs it .
Xp was nice biut it is not up to date anymore .And win 7 is even more easy to crack and update able then it was with xp .

You are funny ;D How about it in first place to launch the program and check what it is ?

Just follow the instructions that are given by the programm.

I told you already that the purpose of this programm to prevent any 16XX errors ,mainly used when retoring to custom firmwares ,i read it doesnt madder if it is about a custom firmware or a official firmware .

It puts your idevice in a special pwnd dfu mode that you need to prevent the 16XX errors.

Hook it up follow the instructions on the screen and report back.

Oh so it was the dfu mode instructions I was to follow then.
I actually tried a few times and couldn't get it. Is it usually that difficult? I'll try again. ;-)
