Skype joins hands with authorities to assist in online surveillance

I really don't have anything to hide, but I do like my privacy!! Thanks to Microsoft there is no longer any privacy while using Skype now...

SKYPE, the online phone service long favoured by political dissidents, criminals and others eager to communicate beyond the reach of governments, has expanded its co-operation with law enforcement authorities to make online chats and other user information available to police.

Surveillance of the audio and video feeds remains impractical, even when courts issue warrants, say industry officials. But that barrier could eventually vanish as Skype becomes one of the world's most popular forms of telecommunication.

The changes to online chats, which are written messages conveyed almost instantaneously between users, result in part from technical upgrades to Skype that were instituted to address interruptions and other problems since Microsoft bought the company last year.

Officials of the United States and other countries have long pushed to expand their access to newer forms of communications to resolve an issue the FBI calls the ''going dark'' problem.

Microsoft has approached the issue with ''tremendous sensitivity and a canny awareness of what the issues would be'', said an industry source.

The company had ''a long track record of working successfully with law enforcement here and internationally'', he said.

The changes, which give the authorities access to addresses and credit card numbers under a formal request, have drawn quiet applause in law enforcement circles but hostility from many activists and analysts.

Authorities had for years complained that Skype's encryption and other features made tracking drug lords, paedophiles and terrorists more difficult. Jihadis recommended it on online forums. Police listening to traditional wiretaps occasionally would hear wary suspects say, ''Hey, let's talk on Skype.''

Hacker groups and privacy experts have been speculating for months that Skype had changed its architecture to make it easier for governments to monitor, and many blamed Microsoft, which has an elaborate operation for complying with legal government requests in countries around the world.

''The issue is, to what extent are our communications being purpose-built to make surveillance easy?'' said Lauren Weinstein, the co-founder of the privacy group People for Internet Responsibility. ''When you make it easy to do, law enforcement is going to want to use it more and more.''

Skype said: ''As was true before the Microsoft acquisition, Skype co-operates with law enforcement agencies as is legally required and technically feasible.''

Political dissidents relied on Skype extensively during the Arab Spring to communicate with journalists, human rights workers and one another, in part because of its reputation for security.

I would think there would be something encrypted and pure peer-to-peer, or something that works similar to Tor for calls.

If there isn't it will be made soon enough. But for what it's good for you United States, I'm moving to Albania where I can buy a concrete bunker, a military grade Land Rover Defender, all the bandwidth I want, and still be one of the richest men in the country

It's ironic really, if you think about it... the excitement began with Apple's 1984 commercial in reference to George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty Four" Novel in regards to Big Brother and privacy, and look now where we are, full circle... Big Brother is watching you....

I remember not too long ago how the DHS was given the right to access and track message boards and social media sites like Facebook and twitter. This went largely unnoticed by the huge majority of sheeple in our country.

People who advocate this type of intrusion in our life usually say something like, "Well if you aren't doing anything illegal you have nothing to worry about so it doesn't really matter." this argument misses the point entirely. The issue is how much of or freedom and liberty we once had in this country is either completely gone or in the process of being stripped away. The companies and government officials/agencies involved in this continually repeat they use this invasion of privacy as a way to better keep our country secure. I am tired of hearing that lone of BS.

Now that it has come out mobile phones and any other device can easily be traced and how apple, then Microsoft have made location based services a preinstalled piece of software it is so easy to see what is going on and has been I the works for some time now.

Years ago when MS had to go to court for being a monopoly I believe a deal was struck to start working with these companies to introduce ways of tracking everyone. This can be seen by the fact more and more that apple and Ms have created more and more of these so called "features" and are left alone by the government and even atencouraged by the government to do so. In trade these companies get massive financial incentives. Some of these are glaringly transparent such as incredibly low tax rates. Apple for instance pays around 9% reportedly to the federal government while smaller companies pay up to 30%+ and when adding state taxes can even exceed 40%. Other things are not so transparent such as government funding these corporations to develop these features and given finnacial incentives once the inclusion of the features are implemented.

Furthermore it should be common sense that if these "features", which are nothing compared to the technology available to government agencies, are available then it is a certainty our government was able to actually see the events which transpired in Libya last month in real time and did nothing. The outcome of those events could have easily been different. It is now reported military officials were giving orders to those on the ground to "stand down". Also considering our jets such as an f-18 can travel as fast as 1500 mph and we had such aircraft a mere 500 miles away even if you use conservative calculations which take into account prepping the plane for takeoff (unlikely because little "prepping" is needed and they are basically ready to go in case of emergency) and the time it takes to get up to max speed and then the time needed to slow down when approaching the area our governments could have been there in less than an hour EASILY and possibly half that time. It's clear, at least to me, that what occurred there was meant to have the outcome which occurred and may leave even been planned in such a fashion. Why else was the White House officials placing blame on a you tube video as the cause so quickly? IMO because it was the cover story they planned to use all along. Ask yourself: How long was that video up, how many anit-Muslim videos are on you the and have been for years, why would this single video cause such chaos, why did these events transpire on such a significant date, why was Ambassador Stevens not given adequate security detail despite traveling to a region known for acts of hostility, why does lady gaga or any celebrity travel with and is escorted by bodyguards many of whom are ex military and the same courtesy and security not given to someone in our own government, why has the story changed more times that we can keep track of , why was the FBI allowed to investigate for only a few hours before leaving the area?

And this is just one recent example of signs of what is to come.

While I try to protect my privacy, which is a moot point in almost any regard, it has become more important to me to start protecting myself. If our goverrnemtn will "stand down" during these events why would they give two shits for me?

Why are military training exercises now involving fully armored tanks traveling in the streets of rural areas? Don't say BS either I live in a rural area and earlier this year I personally witnessed such exercise taking place with my own eyes along with my wife. The TSA is doing training exercises with actual civialians in airports as a means to scare them. Again I have also witnessed this as well as my family.

Why is the U.N. which is comprised of a vast amount of either fake democracies with bogus elections, have only been democracies for a short time, or simply communit dictatorships being allowed to call the shots in so many instances recently.

The U.N. is even going to official for the countries monitoring our election next month and will be present inside the polling locations. Don't believe me? Well the. Why has Texas banned this from occurring stating non US citizens cannot not take part or be involved in the election process according to Texas state law?

The references to an "Orwellian" state are not only appropriate but IMO the world created as fiction in "1984" does not being to describe what this world is headed toward.

Sorry to be such a "downer" but there two terms which are on my mind most of the time are martial law and eugenics/population control.

After all hitler did get his ideas from the US doctors who were the leaders and innovators of socialmdarwinism by either forced sterilization or just stapraight out killing them.

Refer to the documents of the supreme court case of Buck vs Bell in 1927. This routed 30 states to adopt sterilization laws and while 65,000 is the reported number when is a reported number accurate? Likely the number is much higher. These laws stayed on the books in some states until the early 70s. During the Nazi trials following WWII this law was actually cited in nazi's testimony as a defense for their actions!

We now have the human genome project which supposedly will aide in curing disease but in doing so also maps out details which can be used in much more ominous applications.

It just so,happens that if you " follow the money". Bill Gates has donated millions and millions to eugenics organizations and research following the same path many prominent "tech geeks" of the early 1900s did. Ex. Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison etc.

Why are we all friendly with china who practices the limiting to family size and even the killing of those born of "the wrong gender" NOT MY WORDS. And our own VP apparently being understanding and syympathetic to this practice. ON RECORD.

I'll stop here but the evidence is clear where we are headed. A global singular government with less population and no freedom. Not being able to skype anonymously is a tiny near insignificant part of a larger more sinister plan and is likely being reported as means to continue to shield people from the big picture instead of having the effect of doing more research on more ominous topics. Few Americans want to think about, much less take the time, to see what is coming. They just continue their daily life business as usual.

This link below is indeed from a mainstream media website but it includes many references which can be used as a starting point for anyone who doubts anything i have mentioned and would like to develop their own conclusions

Maybe it's something that can be reversed, maybe we can change course, but as long as people remain uninformed that's is not likely. So I hope and pray for the best but simultaneously I prepare for the worst. And if you are looking for more HOT words this post is filled with them.

I no longer care or waste time worrying about my privacy which is long gone. Instead I spend my time trying to lopez the eyes of others. I no longer care if it's via email, texts, im, cell phone, face to face, or landline because frankly I don't think it matters anymore. It can all be tracked so why waste time and energy trying to protect my words when it can be spent on ways of protecting my family, friends, or any actual person who is willing to see the truth and hopefully be able to aide in the defense if and when the time comes. It's a mindset change of me, me, me which is so prevelant here to we, we, we which many will not make. It's nice to see members on here though who are knowledgable about possible upcoming events.
