Busted by ATT for Tethering - Do not use TetherMe from Cydia

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know to stay away from TetherMe in Cydia because apparently ATT knows that I have been tethering and i will be losing my grandfathered plans, so when i see that go into effect, I will have to call and bitch at them, but till then...it still is a pain in the ass! It is not stealth at all and I got a text message today and in the past that stated that they noticed that i have been tethering.

Any ideas of an alternative solution to this? I have been using TetherMe for the past 2 years almost, luckly my contract is soon to expire so not that worried about it, but it is still a pain in the ass and I do think that I will be switching over to Tmobiles unlimited everything (including data) for $50 bux a month.

They don't kno that's a bluff text and apperantly they applied it good to you . You've probably been going over 5gig a month and like thousand others got a text / email , followed a throttle data line . I'll give it 2-3 months before you get a text say "you've been upgraded to a 4gb plan with tethering " .

How much data have you been using per month? Have they texted you with the throttling warning or just the tethering warning?

Sorry to tell you my friend but you can now say good bye t your grandfather plan! To be be honest I don't think they can tell for sure if you are tethering by using tetherme, mywi or the like; if you have unlimited data and you go over 3gb data per month you will receive that email/text and they will upgrade you to the $50 plan (data plus tethering fature). All I can tell you is keep an eye on your statement b/c they will upgrade you.

I left them last week after being with them for 4 years with unlimited data because they updated my plan to the tiered one and I could not get my unlimited data back.

FALSE they actually do know to some degree it has nothing to do with the amount of data you use they would only slow your speed down for what they deem excessive use. PDA Net seem to be the safest way but it is still not 100%.... its about how the tethering program handles the way it streams data.

I am using PDANET and have also received a letter this week stating the same thing. Yes they do know to some extent. I have had friends receive this type of notification from AT&T for years without a change of plan. It seems to be a scare tactic to me.

They cannot see what you're using your data on. That's a privacy issue. And atts 3G speed is way better than Verizon, sprint and tmobile in my experience. I have a 4s on Verizon and my iPhone 4 on straight talk loaded pages and downloaded way faster

Scare tactic?? Not really I have personally known people including myself that they have changed their plan and refused to change it back to unlimited. However at that time you could use an iPhone 1 (original old silver iPhone) and put it back yourself LOL because that trick worked thru iTunes back when only iTunes could setup your iPhone, in iTunes the unlimited plan was still a selection and they had to honor it. That's why the price of the original iPhone at that time still sold for a insane price for an old phone LOL.

That workaround has been closed and you can no longer get away with that trick. So if they snatch away from you now its game over.

Be careful!

They can tell if you are tethering. If you get the right person on the phone and refuse to give up, they can give you the unlimited back. Had the same problem, I told them I let my son was playing with the phone and i dont know what he did, but i assured them it would never happen again and they issued me my unlimited plan that ive had since the iphone 3g first can out. I have been with them for fifteen years. I haven't been tethering since then.

i think it has to do with just using a computer, i been tethering to my ipad for months with no issues but when i connected to my computer one time to download a torrent(30mb file) i got the same letter and a warning text, i used the same excuse as the guy above, that my co-workers convinced me to jailbreack my phone for additional features and thats all they did, they told me to do an update and that should remove the softwares that my coworkers installed, i said ok and that was it. They went as far as saying that since i have the iphone 5 i dont need to worry, theres no software etc to allow that. those bastards are monitoring the jailbreak scene more than we do.

It comes down to what you use your tethering for. I tether all the time but i do things on my laptop that i would also do on my phone just needing the bigger screen. Now once my power was out for a couple days so i used my phone to connect all my PC's in the house to the internet and i downloaded a couple torrents to watch some movies and that set it off. I got a text and called and i just played dumb and they didn't change anything. But as long as you don't do stuff that your phone isn't capable of doing then you will be fine. A normal iPhone cannot DL torrents, zip files, exe files, windows update ect...

You have been using it for 2 years and just got caught...
2 years is a fkn good run...
I'm lucky Optus can't do shit about it, what can they do?
Change my plan, NO.. The sim card I have only goes on one plan..(which is 2 dollars a day)
There system just won't let them change it..
Cut my service, I wouldn't care it's pre paid sim.. I'll just buy another one!!!
One of my mates has been tethering his DVD player to the Internet so he can watch YouTube from it!!!his computer only uses his tethering from his phone..

I have heard of them also sending that MSG to ppl that are not tethering, and not even jailbroken..lol...
So ignore it till it changes, then bitch like all hell..
