iPhone 4s 5.1.1 Jailbreak
Hi there,
Please help! I have very minimal experience will Apple technology, so please explain the easiest way possible when responding.
I purchased a jailbroken iPhone 4S 5.1.1 with Gevey SIM [I believe the previous carrier was Sprint according to the eBay posting, whether or not the sell just put that- no idea].
The iPhone arrived in working condition, all I had to do was insert my SIM.
My phone reset and I am not stuck at an activation screen stating "SIM Not Valid".
I downloaded Redsn0w [redsn0w_win_0.9.15b1] and it stated that the phone is not activated and needs to be. I downloaded iPhone4,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore and tried to plug it into Redsn0w, but it states that I have the incorrect version of Redsn0w.
As I have absolutely no idea what I am doing, I also downloaded Absinthe [absinthe-win-2.0.4.exe] which also says I need to activate first.
When I connect to iTunes it only gives me the option to eject and states that the SIM is invalid.
This phone was previously working jailbroken and now I cannot move past the activation screen.
Please help!

Do you have a friend/family member that will allow you to use their official carrier sim card to activate it?? That's probably the easiest/simplest/only way to go about it cause last I knew ( its been a couple months ) there is no way to hacktivate a 4S.

No, I don't have a SIM I can borrow. Does it need to be an active SIM, or can I purchase a non active one from eBay?
Thanks so much!

What carrier are you wanting to use? I believe if it's a sprint phone, it will not be working for a carrier other then sprint. CDMA phones can't be used for ATT & Tmobile. They use different networks. As, ATT & Tmobile use GSM.
You should try seeing what your phone carrier is locked on by using an imei checker.
iPhone IMEI Checker with SIMLock Status
And, for as long as I remember, I thought gevey sims don't work for CDMA network.
So, chances are if you activate it still, will it work for your carrier? High chances not if its a sprint phone. Best way to activate it is to find someone with the sim card to activate it. It doesn't need to be active. Active and non active sims work.

you thought wrong, look at this.
Gevey for CDMA
a.morrison
use IMEI checker to identify on what carrier iPhone is locked to.
then by a SIM card on ebay. you can purchase a non active SIM card also.

No it doesn't need to be active, just needs to be original carrier sim card.

Thank you all for your help!
It definitely works with a Gevey SIM, as it was working perfectly until I reset it [I had to reset because I switched carriers. I shouldn't have listened to them to begin with- dummy mistake]. The seller says the previous carrier was Sprint, but I will check IMEI. It is 5.1.1, as I never upgraded and would prefer not to.
Thank you so much for your help! I will find a carrier SIM and get it activated again.

Thank you everyone for your help, again!
I have one more question. So, I checked the IMEI number and it is locked to Sprint. Difficulty I am having, finding a 4S Sprint SIM card. I even called Sprint, and they are unable to sell me on.
Do you think if I bought a normal inactive SIM and cut it, it would still work to move me past the activation screen?
Thank you again for your help!

Yes a regular sim that's been cut down will work just fine. Use a pair of scissors and trim just a little bit at a time Until you get the right size. The size of the contact points on regular sims and micro sims are the same, only the surrounding plastic is different
