Some bad news about jailbreaking and unlocking
First of all this is copy and past from iClarified - Apple News - Library of Congress Rules Jailbreaking iPads and Unlocking New iPhones Illegal
The U.S. Library of Congress has ruled that jailbreaking the iPad and unlocking iPhones purchased after January 2013 is no longer legal.
Jailbreaking iPhones is still allowed under exemptions to the DMCA that will be in effect for three years.
Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute lawfully obtained software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications with computer programs on the telephone handset.
This exemption is a modification of the proponents’ proposal. It permits the circumvention of computer programs on mobile phones to enable interoperability of non-vendor- approved software applications (often referred to as “jailbreaking”), but does not apply to tablets – as had been requested by proponents – because the record did not support it.
Unlocking
In addition the new exemptions only allow for phones you already have, as well as those purchased before January, to be unlocked. Phones purchased after January 2013 can only be unlocked with the carrier's permission.
Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable a wireless telephone handset originally acquired from the operator of a wireless telecommunications network or retailer no later than ninety days after the effective date of this exemption to connect to a different wireless telecommunications network, if the operator of the wireless communications network to which the handset is locked has failed to unlock it within a reasonable period of time following a request by the owner of the wireless telephone handset, and when circumvention is initiated by the owner, an individual consumer, who is also the owner of the copy of the computer program in such wireless telephone handset, solely in order to connect to a different wireless telecommunications network, and such access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.
This exemption is a modification of the proponents’ proposal. It permits the circumvention of computer programs on mobile phones to enable such mobile phones to connect to alternative networks (often referred to as “unlocking”), but with limited applicability. In order to align the exemption to current market realities, it applies only to mobile phones acquired prior to the effective date of the exemption or within 90 days thereafter.
PS3/Game Consoles
The Library of Congress rejected a proposed exemption that would allow for jailbreaking of game consoles.
Because the Register determined that the evidentiary record failed to support a finding that the inability to circumvent access controls on video game consoles has, or over the course of the next three years likely would have, a substantial adverse impact on the ability to make noninfringing uses, the Register declined to recommend the proposed class.
This is quite unfortunate news for those in the jailbreak and unlocking community. We'll keep you update with any more developments.
The full ruling can be found at the link below...

Can't say that I'm suprised... well... they didn't mention anything about Apple TV's...
So in the future the cyber police is going to monitor all phones to see if they're unlocked?

24 Months with AT&T service = $2500
24 Months with T-Mobile plan = $1450

Can something like this be ever wiped out. Don't think so. It will only get pushed underground and more peeps will be intrigued to jailbreak...

I think the problem is that people like the dev team will not make the tools so that you COULD jb. The problem is not really them telling YOU you cant jailbreak, its that the guys that make the tools could/would get in trouble. The dev teams always use exploits so that they do not modify the code directly to get around being hunted down, but now they could have DMCA violations brought against them since they are circumventing the controls.
The thing I don't get is this, (and correct me if I'm wrong) ... but in the past people like MuscleNerd have said that they could easily JB the iDevices if they modified the firmware, and/or iTunes directly, but then they would be using code they didn't own, and giving out these modified files would be a copyright violation. This change above seems to invalidate that logic, therefore, why not modify the firmware, don't tell anyone YOU did it per-say, just a group of unknowns, and post the IPSW and itunes to piratebay and let the users do what they want with it?
You know, just like Reloaded, Skidrow, Prophet, etc ... they modify games to remove the controls and upload the results and (well except for FLT) they do fine, and we all are happy for it!

You guys are only thinking on your small scale selves lol. Most of the dev's excluding pod2g live in the US, with pod living and researching in France. the devs will probably be scared fuckless and stop making the tools under compliance with us law or inevitably face charges in US courts.
And nobody wants Apple to sue them, because we all know that the dev's first of all do this in their spare time and will not pay any personal expense to allow them to continue making tools. Secondly, the devs just don't have to motivation to fight this case that they are bound to lose due to Apple's wretched ways in court. It's a lose/lose for them.
Actually, I've been reading the thing right now and it's not so bad. Any phones bought within 3 years of the ruling are free to jb/unlock. so that means that all iPhone 8's cannot be jailbroken without an underground scene, which will surely happen.

look at the edit please. i understand that musclenerd said that there would be a 3 year exemption from the date of the document. the fact is though, there people have REAL lives. They code to make us happy as a hobby, which they thoroughly enjoy and some have even taken it up as their job.
My initial post was probably miscommunicated due to a lack of knowledge. I wrote it off of the initial shock that jailbreaking would become illegal and any dev who continued to publish tools would have Apple on their ass.
Just because someone retweets doesn't mean that they necessarily corroborate with the tweets opinions'.
