How can I tell if it's a 2nd Generation?

Hi. I'm looking to buy an Apple TV off a guy on Craig's List. He's going to meet me somewhere to make the sale. How can I tell if it's a 2nd generation just by looking at it? Does it matter what iOS version it's currently at? It doesn't because the latest can be JB, right? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks!

Um the only way you can tell if from the box. If it display 1080 then its ATV 3 and if it's 720 then it's ATV 2. JB is possible on the latest firmware for ATV 2. Hope that helps

Bullshit!

When i went out looking for ATV 2 and was only able to find ATV 3 it was very simple to find the difference.

ATV2:- Order Number = MC572LL/A Model Number = A1378

ATV3:- Order Number = MD199LL/A Model Number = A1427

It will say 1378 or 1427 on the box from the outside.

1080p is a lot easier to remember than MD199LL/A or A1427

Wow, remember 2 x 4 digits...

I found this great, if u set ur mind up to say, i need a 1378 then thats all u need to know. if it says anythingt apart from 1378, walk away.

I see that you have an iPhone4 on Ios5. Bring a laptop, connect to your phone internet via personal hotspot and hook up the apple tv to iTunes.
I know it might seem like hassle but it'd be worth it.

Where will it identify it as 2nd Generation? In the name?

Easy way to check is from your iPhone, android phone what ever you might be using then go to apple website then go to support then at the bottom of page you will see where it says Sheck for service or coverage use that and put in the serial number located at the bottom of the apple tv and it will tell you if it's a 2 or 3 and you can also see if it's still under warranty. Kills 2 birds with one stone!!
