@thenoobie because some people like making their own signed custom firmware. I would rather have custom firmware that has my own settings, my own debs, everything already pre-installed. Also I like having my root partition bigger than normal. You can tweak a lot with your phone with a custom IPSW. Not to mention the 3gS with baseband 06.15 used to require custom IPSWs to even restore. This also should remove the activation requirement for devices unless you tell it not to. Which can be very good for those not on an official carrier.

@whoadie, sn0wbreeze is VERY easy to use. Literally download the IPSW you want to use (the program even tells you where to get them), select the IPSW through the program, select your options you want, then hit build IPSW. Everything is self explanatory. Once done, use iReb which is built into sn0wbreeze and put your device into pwned DFU. Then open iTunes, shift, click Restore, find your created ipsw which should be on your desktop and load it up. Make sure that you are not using a USB 3.0 port to load firmware, I had to find out the hard way that the firmware load usually screws up with USB 3.0. Also @Hien, there is no possible way for your to wake up and have a new version of iOS on your device, there is no such thing as an accidental upgrade either. Multiple user authorizations are required to be able to upgrade iOS. If someone upgrades without being told by someone that knows what they are doing, especially without saving their SHSHs first, they deserve what they get and deserve to have to wait for a jailbreak to be made.
