I had this problem with large hd/mkv movie files and media player. I had to set up a virtual FTP server on my computer and stream to xbmc using a local ip address. It works a lot faster than smb and afp

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion:
At first glance it looks like Apple has removed the FTP server support in Lion. But if you dig a little deeper you'll find that the only thing that has really been removed is the GUI related to the FTP server.

Here's how you can start the FTP server in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion:
Enable FTP Server in Mac OS X Lion | ITworld

I take it you haven't used terminal before.

Just type your password and hit enter. Your password doesn't show up on the screen to protect your security.

Dont close the terminal window. Just listen to me and do what i say.

When it says "To proceed, enter your password"
type your computers password and hit enter.
Nothing will be typing on the screen. just type it anyways and hit enter.

I use PureFTPd Manager. You can read about it here at the XMBC forums. The last post of the first page has detailed instructions on how to set it up. It works perfect for me.

I just updated to lion 10.7.3 and the change log says it fixes windows file sharing (smb). That might work for you. I would try this pureftp though. It was easy to set up and works quite well.
