Just traded my iPad 2 for the new iPad and I love the Retina display. I don't need to pop in my contacts in the morning now to use the pad. Hah.

Shame on Apple for a poor implementation of the technology. At least give us an option of changing the resolution of the output.
So if given a choice, would I buy again? No.

I think its the stupidest name for it.
I have a JB iPad 1 and I'm not interested in any Apple product if it cant be jailbroken thats why I never got a iPad 2 as there was never a jailbreak for it for ages and by the time it could be jailbroken I wasn't interested in it.
I'm not really interested in the iPad 3 as the Samsung Galaxy Tab sounds a heap better tablet. Whats even better will be any Windows 8 tablet when they come out. I will just wait till them and get one of those instead of wasting my money on a stupid locked up device with a Apple logo.
When it can be jailbroken with a tick like any Android device then I will think about getting one. Till then I'll stick with what I have as it works fine and Apple can kiss my a$$.
It's also prices way to high. I'll pay 1/4 or maybe 1/3 the price but not what it is now for what you get. If there was a memory card slot or USB slot then it might be worth it but as its not expandable at all then they can get stuffed.
I would prefer to carry 2 memory sticks than 2 iPads.
Even carrying a few USB sticks is still heaps better than getting 2 iPads. As the iPads cant be expanded you have no choice but buy a 2nd one if you want to carry more data with you, where Android tablets are expandable with memory sticks and as they are so small you can carry many of them around with you without any problems like the ones that come with the iPad.

Hey Ying Yang,
Want to enlighten me?
I have a reasonable understanding of "how things work", but can you be a little more specific of you criticism?
What is it that your infering?
BTW: I am currently upgrading my website using javascript, to detect & direct users of retina devices to automatically download hires versions of images on my site. This effectively involves scaling up lores images to create hires duplicates, then scaling down the ratio of the viewable image on retina devices.
So now I have to have lores & hires images, so users of retina devices can get the most out of the retina technology. Not exactly a good implementation of the technology is it?
J

you say that when you're using safari you're not seeing the great resolution that it claims it has. If you go to a website and the site has a pic but the resolution is only.... say 800x600. It can't give you the awesome high res picture quality you're expecting to see. To judge and critique the screen based on safari and say its no better than the ipad2 makes no sense. Put a pic from a digital slr in full res and say that the screen sucks.

Could be a defective model, but my guess is that it's the upgraded hardware inside. All devices are gonna get somewhat warm, but my iPad3 has never gotten dangerously hot. It also has an intense display, which would make sense that it could cause the iPad to get somewhat warm under moderate use.

Why would you use that as an excuse that it's a waste of money? You knew the camera was only slightly better and you also knew it wouldnt get much use on an iPad...before even purchasing it.

Has nothing to do with the iPad3, but rather the version of Safari.

Again, you knew this before buying the iPad3, so don't list that as a reason of it being a waste of money.

Seriously? Aches and cramps from an iPad...honestly? The iPad2 3G + WiFi weighs 1.35lbs, whereas the iPad3 4G + WiFi weighs 1.46lbs...are you really trying to say that .16lb difference is noticeably heavier and causes aches and pains?
Also, the iPad2 is 0.34inches thick, whereas the iPad3 is 0.37inches thick...that 0.3in difference is nothing and you can't even tell the difference by looking at it. Stop coming up with bullshit excuses...at least find things that are actually worth mentioning. You basically knew everything you're complaining about before you bought the iPad3...but then you still continued to buy it? No ones fault but your own.

Ying yang,
Firstly, this thread asked for opinions on the new ipad. This is what I expressed.
Secondly, my comment re: Safari resolution, was not related to viewing 800x600 res images. It was related to images up to 2048x1536. If they are jpg, the new ipad/safari scales them down unessesarily. This is not making use of the retina screen.
J
---------- EDIT ----------
Karma,
My comments re: waste of money, is related to the new features of the new ipad and the implementation of them, and whether they are worth it to me. Hence my opinion, as asked in the title of this thread.
Point 1. Defective model? heh, common report worldwide. I never claimed it was "dangerous" either. I agree that more power is required to light up the extra pixels. More power, more heat. I know the reasons, it is a negative of the new ipad compared to previous models, which is why I mentioned it.
Point 2. Camera - actually, I used the camera after I wrote the above, and was really impressed with the results. I dont like the lack of pause/continue when recording video. It creates a new file each time. Not perfect, but better than the ipad2
Point 3. 4G-LTE - if we cant use it here in Australia, then its a feature that has no value to us in Australia. Sounds like a waste to me.
Point 4. Weight - I currently use both my ipad2, then when the charge runs out, I swap it for my ipad3, then vice-versa. Contrary to what you say or think (yes your stats/figures are accurate), there is a noticable difference with heavy or prolonged use. With the ipad3, I have noticed that after a while, I have to rest the unit against my lap, or somthing to help support the unit. I used to do this before with my ipad2, just less often. No biggie.
All of the points I mentioned, are not a waste of money individually, but all together, they dont make the purchase worthwhile over an ipad2. That was the opinion I wanted to express.
I was aware of some of these negatives before purchasing, not the retina display limitation in safari, but the 4G-LTE I was. The ACCC in Australia has forced Apple to offer refunds to customers unhappy about the 4G incompatibiliy. Even with this option, I wont be refunding the unit.
Again, my comments in this thread were to input & post in the SinfulIphone forum an honest opinion of the new ipad. If you dont like it, why ask people to post?
J

Well, all I know is that I'm loving this iPad and it was worth every penny. For me, it doesn't get hot (or really even that warm) under heavy use, the 4G is unbelievably fast in my area, the weight is perfectly fine and doesn't affect me in any way, and Safari doesn't affect me in any way since I don't use that as my browser. There are plenty of other browsers out there that take advantage of the display.
You're right, though. You're definitely entitled to your opinion and I'm not going to stop you from doing so...I'm just saying, a lot of what you're complaining about was well known before purchasing it.
In either case, I'm loving my iPad 3...gonna be even better once a jb gets released
