If it is broken you may need to repair the part or send to apple

There are 2 mics on the iPhone 4..
One at the top by the headphone socket. looks like a pin hole..
One at the bottom left..

Oh have you been using headphones..
They can mess up the mic..
If you have try inserting again a few times..

Having the exact same problem here. Been reading online and some people are saying that it's a short due to a screw or something. I'm on 5.0.1 fw and have the same exact symptoms.

People can only hear me on speaker phone. Have you tried restoring the firmware back to 5.0.1?

Curious to see if its a software issue which I am hoping. About to do a restore today but if you have already tried could save me some time.

---------- EDIT ----------

It's not due to using headphones man. The bottom mic is the one we are having problems with.

And you do know that the headphone jack and the mic on the top are completely separate. Thanks for your suggestion but did you actually read somewhere online that people are damaging their top microphone due to using a headset or did you just come up with that conclusion yourself?

Anyways thanks for trying.

I have the same issue and it all started out of nowhere, never dropped my phone or anything else. I did some research and found that it could be an issue with Audio chip and it needs to be reball into the chipset. There are couple of videos on youtube showing you how to reball the chip too. But that's a professional job and i dont think i can do that. Below is the first part of that youtube video

Also i did restore and all but nothing helped. So save yourself some time.
I am right now stick to headphones or bluetooth headset for phone calls.

I had this problem, and yes it's because of the screw making some problems, anyway i fixed it buy putting some tape in between screw and noise reduction sensor.

...what if your whole life has been wrong....

Thanks for posting the pic. Did the problem ever come back? Any recommendation on where to buy the screwdriver to open up the iphone4?

Btw guys don't bother doing a restore.

I restored mine back to 5.0.1 using redsn0w stiched my firmware then ran iReb and did a full restore.

The problem still persists. Mine is a hardware issue for sure. I will try what you suggested cdm. If not only thing left for me turning my phone into apple and paying the 199 for a refurbished phone.

Anyone know if they extend the contract if you pay the $199? TIA.

problem never come back,

take off this black plate by removing 5 screws. On screw where arrow points, after removing the plate there is one more very strange screw. remove it and put some tape between it and top metal sensor, and screw it back so you have kind of isolation in between screw and sensor.

How can you put tape on the bottom screw when the top screw will have to be screwed back into the bottom screw?

I will give this a go next time I come across one with this fault

If not then re-ball the audio compiler is the working solution

you don't put on screw, you put next to it, or around it if you like, can you just see the pic and red line between screw and that top golden metal ?

Sorry to revive an old thread!

But I want to say that the tape method also worked for me, anyone who is wondering whether to attempt this or not, I would recommend it!

Many thanks to cdm!
