[iOS 5.x.x] Speed up iPhone iPod Touch and iPad

Note: This is not mine, and I do not intend to take credit for this and other things. I posted this for educational purposes. If something goes wrong don't blame me, you chose this path... This was originally made by matt912836

Use at your own risk!

What does Dynamic_Pager do?
- The iPod Touch 4G has 256MB of RAM and 8/32/64GB of Flash Memory depending on your model.
- Dynamic_Pager gives your device the ability to use Flash Memory as Random Access Memory (RAM, to an extent).

Are there any side effects to this?
- Its a fact that Flash Memory has a limited number of read/write cycles. The difference between Flash Memory and RAM is that Flash Memory has a lot less cycles available. Since RAM is written to a lot more frequently than Flash, and your Flash is being used as RAM, then using Virtual Memory will in theory reduce the life of your device.

- Virtual Memory was introduced to iOS a little more than a year ago, yet there hasn't been a single case of a device actually not working anymore due to using it. People usually say "VM broke my device, I had to restore to fix it", fact is if it really did kill your Flash memory, you wouldn't even be able to turn it on. Its said that the LCD would probably burn out or the battery would die before Flash memory would die on your device.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

- Previous versions of the plist would crash iOS 4.1, but I've gotten just the right settings to make it stable enough for public use. -

Installation:

There are two versions, a 256MB version and a 512MB version. This doesn't mean that your adding on 256 or 512 MB of RAM, and thats it. It just means each paging file will either be 256 or 512 MB EACH. If your using 256MB and background enough apps to fill it up, then a new paging file will be created. Its a matter of how intense you plan to multitask and spacial concerns.

1. Move the desired com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist from either the 256 or 512 folder, depending on what version you want, to "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons". Make sure permissions are set to 755 (use iFile).
2. Move com.apple.virtualMemory.plist to "/Library/Preferences". Make sure permissions are set to 755 (use iFile).
3. Change the permissions of /private/var/vm to 777 (Read Write Execute for all three) *VERY IMPORTANT*
(note: change the folder vm's permissions I got confused the first time)
Failure to not follow all steps completely can result in your device going into safe mode when activating VM

Usage:

1. When you have followed all the installation steps fully, reboot your device.
2. Open SBSettings once your device has fully rebooted and the SpringBoard is showing.
3. Open the Processes toggle and hit Free Memory to enable Virtual Memory

- Your device may become unresponsive during this time. It will take between 15 - 30 seconds to become responsive again. Once it does, you will see a drastic increase in available memory available, 180-200MB depending on what you have installed.

Tested on a 4th Generation iPod Touch, running Firmware version 4.1

Reposted to notify it works on 5.0.1 on all devices

link:iOS5_DynamicPagerby_matt912836.zip

New script by member Corsair1274: Firmware 5.1.1 Mod4.rar

Note: Tested and has less tendency to crash into safe mode.

For iPhone 4S and iPad2, I must use the 512MB version, right ?
Please click the button below if you think I deserve it

I don't know You decide. I heard the 512 is more stable than 256 but the 4S is already fast I would not recommend you try it. Also note this has not been tested on the new iPad. Take caution and read thoroughly before you decide.

I guess look at the title. And it may crash to safe mode if you don't use Corsair's version (bottom of the post)

Do you need to set ownership as root for Owner and wheel for Group for the two files and the vm folder?

Also, exactly how many swap files is this supposed to create?

Thanks

Sorry for not answering imediately, I hadn't noticed anyone post. Anyway, Yes you have to set ownership for both files to root and wheel and this creates 1 Swapfile. If you get Corsair's It creates about 2 to 3 Swap files.

It really depends on how much memory you need. Normally there are two 64 MB files, but after talking to ANZBoy1993, I decided to create one for 512 MB as well. I will explain one thing. In the beginning, I decided to go with the minimum memory amount of 64 MB and split the files up so it will not write to one file in one area of memory so much. I thought this was safer since many people are concerned with NAND issues. As stated many times, VM has always been on my phones and to date the only issue I have is when they update the firmware and change how the commands are used up upgrade the commands themselves. If anyone needs a reference, go to this link here, download this PDF and read about the commands and their usage ----> Free Cloud Storage - MediaFire

I uploaded both versions to Mediafire and everyone is welcomed to try them out. I still use the 64 MB version, but if you want to compare the codes, just use a plist editor and open the files to see what I do. Feel free to play with them. Here are the files they are in rar format so you have to unzip. I think everyone in here knows the directions already and its the same:

com.apple.virtualMemory.plist goes to -------->/Library/Preferences
com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist goes to -------->/System/Library/LaunchDaemons

Here are the files:
64 MB split files---> Firmware 5.1.1 Mod4.rar

512 MB---> Firmware 5.1.1 512MB.rar

Let me know how things work enjoy!!

Well the tweak works really well and is pretty stable. (Using Consair's 512 5.1.1 Mod). I've gotten about 185 MB max and I'm not concern or my device's life cause once the iPhone 5 comes out this one's gonna just collect dust. Thanks for the tips.

This tweak works great with all the other tweak to free up RAM, the max free ram I'm getting is 353MB but it goes up and down from 353MB to 348MB ... when I first booted up and enabled it, it went up to 392MB!!!!!

I 4got to mentioned, I installed SkyRa1n Siri port before doing this and it eats up my RAM, I was getting from 43MB to 90MB, then I removed some files some the Daemon and it went from 120MB to 146MB. I did another tweak and removed files that arent needed and was getting 150MB to about 200MB so now with this tweak my RAM is now what I mentioned above. Maybe if I took off SkyRa1n, I could be seeing at least 390MB Max.... which is quite interesting
