So if you get into iPhone/iPod hacking long enough there will most likely come a time when you will need to know how to SSH into your phone. Why would anyone need to do this? Well there are many reasons but for the average person you will probably one need to SSH into your phone to install a deb file (debian package), or to do something manually like run a command, install/uninstall a package etc.
Things you will need.
- OpenSSH (Cydia)
- PuTTY 0.60
- Wireless router with a WiFi connection
Ok so first thing you will want to do is install OpenSSH
onto your phone. Do this by going into Cydia > Sections > Networking > OpenSSH
After that make sure that your phone is connected to your WiFi network. We need to the IP Address that your router has assigned to your iPhone. Goto Settings > Wi-Fi
and then you should see your network in the list. Tap on the blue right arrow that is next to your network.
Now on the next screen write down your iPhone's IP Address, then go ahead and press the home button on your phone to return to the home screen.
Now you can open up PuTTY. Now type in your iPhone's IP Address in the Host Name
field. Make sure all your settings look like these.
After you got everything entered in correctly click on the Open
Now if this is your first time SSH'ing into your phone, it can take up to FIVE MINUTES before you will get a connection. So just be patient.
Next you will get a black window asking you for your login info. For the login type root
and hit enter, and then type the Password alpine
and hit enter.
That's it! 8)
