Jailbreak without the unlock?

So this seems like a very basic question I haven't really seen addressed in my search for answers on this topic, but the scenario is a friend of mine with an iPhone saw what I did with my iPod and wanted the same for his phone. He's on 3.1.3 so I told him it
miiight be possible, but he already has a contract and is with AT&T so unlocking wouldn't really serve a purpose for him. CAN I just JB his iPhone wihout unlocking and would that cause any problems with the phone? Thanks.

if he bought it new with 3.1.3 then there is no jailbreak available at this time for it...maybe when the ipad or the iphone 4g comes out, but not now....

Jailbreaking and unlocking aren't like a package deal, you have to unlock after jailbreaking. So you have to chose to unlock or not.

That's exactly it. I'd want to jailbreak while not unlocking, and I wanted to see if it was a "package deal" so to speak or not. It looks like it's not and it's okay to do this(not sure from the replies), just not with the current FW at 3.1.3. Can I get some quick confirmation with this so when a JB is available with future updates, I can just go ahead and do my friend's iPhone?

Well it all depends if he has a 3g or 3gs. The problem is that the 3gs cannot be jailbroken yet on 3.1.3 and there is no way for him to downgrade it. So if its a 3g not 3gs it can be jailbroken. Just get redsn0w 0.9.4 and go from there.
