How to find out if I have a factory unlocked phone

I got a 3gs 16gb iphone from a trade for a 3gs 16gb on 3.1.3 +$80
It was jailbroken and unlocked when I got it. Pulled out a AT&T card and put my T-Mobile card in it when driving away from the trade, it pulled up T-Mobile service (able to make calls) When I go into Cydia, manage, packages Blacksn0w is not in there or checked when I do a search for it. I believe the original owner came from Istambule (due to some pics and music on the phone), so I think the phone was bought out of the US. Is there any way to tell if it is factory unlocked?

Thanks!
Stupidity should be painful!

are you sure its on 3.1.3
and what is the baseband version
4.26, 5.11, 5.12?
if its 5.12 and works on tmobile, its factory unlocked
if its baseband is at 4.26, look for ultrasn0w in cydia
thats your unlock

No iphone is 'factory unlocked' to my knowledge. Considering the abilities of an unlocked phone can not be billed and there is no way for AT&T to make money off of it. Tethering is a perfect example of this. AT&T have recently decided NOT to come out with it standard for the lack of a way to bill it to it's users.

No company would make something standard that can not make them money.
If I helped you, please push the thanks button

I traded a phone running 3.1.3, and this phone is running 3.1.2 FW, 5.11 BB.
No evidence of ultrasn0w, purplesn0w, or blacksn0w.

Uhh... I know for a fact that users in the UK have been able to get their phone officially unlocked after their contract is up.

yes but with the 3GS which has been out for 8 months, no body's contract is up !!!!

Update========================

In Singapore, New Zealand and Australia, and I think Hong Kong it is against the law to sell a locked cellphone, they deemed it to be some anti competitive behavior, so providers are not allowed to lock cellphones
PLEASE HIT THANKS IF I'VE HELPED

I got this from Wikipedia: "Italy has SIM locking laws that the carriers must specify the amount of subsidies, and subscribers can obtain unlocking codes after 9 months by paying 1/2 of the listed subsidies. The SIM lock must be removed within 18 months"
PLEASE HIT THANKS IF I'VE HELPED

They most likely used blackra1n app for the unlock. When it's done through the app it will not show up in cydia as a installed package. i have a friend that just purchased a 3gs that is unlocked but has no cydia. He cant restore cause no shsh is on file and its a mc model so he cant use a custom firmware.

I LOVE THIS SITE!!!! HIT THANKS IF I HELPED!!!

If I get an unlock code from AT&T or Cingular for a 3GS, will the unlock be affected if I update to 3.1.3 through itunes?

My model number is: MB717LL -- I have a feeling my phone may be factory unlocked, is there a way to be sure?

If I upload an un-activated custom firmware, will any SIM activate it when I connect ti itunes for the first time?
