!!!HELP!!!

Hi guys, I am new to this site, and came here because you all seem soooo smart with fixing iphone problems!!!

I have a 32gb iphone 3gs that I wan't to use on the Rogers network in Canada.

I got it unlocked form someone who used blacksnow, but that would randomly give me like 1 bar signal or go into NO SERVICE for a long while.

I took it back to the person and they restored it using somethign called a custom 3.1.2 I think.

They said they could unlock it for me using blacksnow and I said yes.

A few days later.....same problem NO SERVICE

I am not sure if they did teh unlock wrong, because other people said this blacksnow thing worked fine for them on rogers.

P.S. I had my rogers SIM in the phone when he unlocked it, could that be what damaged teh unlock? Should I get an ATT sim card and put that in next time?

Thanks!!!!! I really hope someone can help me I cant wait to start using this iphone!!! My boyfriend used to help me with all my cellphone problems but since we broke up I am completely clueless

I remove SIM for jailbreak/unlock, works every time. The custome firmware here works, follow instructions.

wow thx for the quick replies!!! WOW, I think I can try to unlock it at home myself, instead of paying someone $20 to do it

ok so from what all of you said, here's where I am at:

step 1: I will remove all sim cards form my phone

step 2: I will download the #2 file from here: Firmware 3.1.2 Pre-Jailbroken Custom IPSW Files - SiNfuL iPhone

step 3: I will restore my phone to this file in itunes (should I have my phone at teh screen with teh connect to itunes screen when I do this? or do I do it while the phone is on, or off like normal??)

step 4: I will turn off 3G in the settings

step5: I will download and install blacksnow (Which one should I use, I see that tehre is one called RC1, 2, 3, AND 2 Final -- are they all the same??)

step6: Should I turn off 3G first, and then insert my sim, or the other way around?

Is that it, did I miss anything?

Do you still have cydia installed? If so its probably still unlocked and just need to make sure the 3g is turned off. Sometimes after my kids get a hold of my phone the accidentally turn on the 3g and it has the same issues. It will go in and out of service and only show one bar.

1. Make sure you have 3g off. It may be that simple.
2. If you have cydia on your phone add the repo http://www.sinfuliphonerepo.com
3. Install blacksn0w from the repo.
4. If it just says searching reboot your phone.

Make sure u loaded the Csfw for non official carrier user.
after download of da CsFw= Customfirmware connect your phone ,
(i leave my sim always in da phone i aint got problems so far ) take out the sim o leave it inside
asu prefer. Press shift on keyboard and then in itunes the restore button,
a file explorer opens and u can navigate to where the CsFw ist stored ,select it and the rest does itunes.After restore u are jailbreaked cydia is also already installed and ready to go. First times cydia starts and shuts again ( usual).
Add under manage /sources/add sources as first :
http://www.sinfuliphonerepo.com and u can download i dunno
what baseband u got i assume you need to make it blackrain wich u can load there,
(fu..ing open source shit) but anyway.
And if ya still got problems with your carrier after the whole procedure .
We continue to try solving your probs .See a restore is no succes guaranty and jailbreak is only firsttime like a kinda hart for newbies but we all began in a certain way like this. And maybe u need to do it again so be prepared.
so keep that in mind .But u r not allone Sinfulfam will try to help you.That costs time but not everytime 20 bugs lol.

WOW, I am learning so much you guys are awesome!!

Heres what i did:

(my ROGERS sim was in the phone for this whole process)

I downloaded the custom firmware from here (the activated 3.1.2 one for 3GS)

I did teh shift restore thing in itunes, and it reset my phone like new.

At this point on the signal part of the screen there is just like 4 lines like this ----
And it doesn't show my phone number in itunes, so I guess it is still locked, right?

I went to settings and turned 3G off, and went to cydia, updated it like it asked me to, added the sinfulrepo.com and downloaded and installed blacksnow (it didnt specify RC1 2 or 3).

The phone now says searching... so I rebooted it.

When I turned it on, it says No Service

I turned 3G back on,a nd then airplane mode on and off again to make it search again. But a few seconds later it went back to no Service

I don't know what it could be, the sim works in my other phone

I also tried the Reset Network Settings thing in settings, but no luck.

Also when i turn teh phone on it says I have a new voicemail for sum reason

Check to make sure you have blacksn0w installed in cydia. It will have a check mark next to it. Try to reinstall it. Have you tried a different sim card in the phone? It may be a problem with the phone.

What modem firmware version is on your phone? Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware

I'm assuming you are on 05.11.07 but I would like to know for sure rather than just guess seeing as how it hasn't been mentioned yet.

Also which Custom FW are you downloading? Are you downloading an ACTIVATED or NOT ACTIVATED FW?

@Juan: yup it's checked off in cydia. I tried installing and re-installing but still same thing

@Sinful: yup, it says 05.11.07. Also in the about screen it says my carrier is Rogers 5.0, but for Network it says Not Available.

The Fw seems to be right one imo.
Blacksnow is also the right unlock for 5.11.07 and you also deinstalled and reinstalled blacksnow .

Thats what I would do , try another a official sim like AT&T, u can check or exclude that the phone hardware took damage.

I dont think it took damage but the fact u had problems bfore the person restored the phone and it for a certain time worked and then again stopped as u said thats a strange part too.
Try a official sim @ first thats my suggestion.
Then we see on .

I will ask around from my friends if anyone of them have an ATT sim I could borrow.

In the meantime, i read somewhere that doing the blacksnow thing can mess with your baseband. Baseband is the 05.11.07 thing rite?
I googled iphone baseband, and someone said the baseband is what handles calls, maybe this is my problem?

Is there anyway to do a restore on teh baseband like I did for the 3.1.2 file? Like if i could restore/fix the baseband file after i do the blacksnow thing??

Somebody lied to you

All blacksn0w does is allow you to unlock your phone, THAT'S IT! It doesn't upgrade or downgrade your baseband in any way.

ok, I might just be an idiot, lol Someone told me that my phone might just be factory unlocked from the get go.

Is there a way to tell from the settings?
This is after I did the custom restore in itunes to the 3.1.2 ACTIVATED file, and my rogers sim is in teh phone:

If it is factory unlocked, should I just load the UNACTIVATED file and be ready to go?

Most likely the phone is blacklisted.Maybe the previous owner sell it and after a while claim insurance to get a new one
In this case,you can sell it abroad
How 75$ sounds to you?

Edit:
Just kidding.Try with a different sim card.Maybe Rogers just disconect the sim card on your account.
If is working,you have to ask for a replacement simcard tomorrow

So I tried it and my phone was not one of the factory unlocked ones.

I noticed when I do get service, it says carrier is Rogers 5.0......shouldnt I be on 5.6

How do I update this? I think ppl called it the ipcc file??

britt im in the same boat as you but on t-mobile... I've done several unlocks on 3g and 2g iphones and this one seems to be giving me a problem... either --- 1 bar or no service... and it says I have a voicemail occasionally... I really need to find the solution to this as I have been searching for weeks! please let me know if you find out anything new...

This is sooooo frustrating!!!! I have tried everything.....I'm going to give it another week and if I cant get it working im just gonna go back to my old Samsung phone

When you are uninstalling blacksn0w are you rebooting then re-installing it and then rebooting again???

Sometimes it helps to reboot after you install/uninstall something as major as the unlock even though in the description on cydia it sometimes says you dont have to reboot...

Also with the RC versions of Blacksn0w... use the RC3 version for 3.1.2 as the RC2 final was redone for iphones on the 3.1.3 jailbroken version...
