How to Overclock/Underclock your iPhone or iPod touch running 3.0+

UPDATE 6/26/10 - Tested on iOS4. Seems to work fine.

UPDATE 5/18/10 - Many people have now tested this mod... The majority DO say that they feel an increase of speed in their device. Here is a link to POST NUMBER 23 BY OTOSAN. The screenshots on that post are of Checkup v1.2. Available on this website. - I feel this is all the proof you should need to at least test this out. There is no harm in doing this, as long as you do it correctly. It can easily be changed back. My 3G is STILL running great. I'm very happy I found this mod, and I'm sure you will too. As I've said. There isn't really a way to check if it works unless you run a before and after benchmark or speed test. The link to post number 23 above shows you this.

For those of you that feel that the hack isn't working- Please realize that your iDevice has a power stepping processor... It lowers the CPU speed to the set minimum you set in the Fstab file mod for certain operations, and when battery is low. If you want to try and force the Device to stay Overclocked for ALL operations, Try looking at my updates in step 3 below. Don't expect your battery to last very long though.

There's no reason to scowl me if you've read my disclaimer. Enjoy, and I hope you all have success in overclocking your devices.

_____________________________________________________________

Since the first overclocking thread was a big letdown, I started this one...

This is the only potentially working method I have found for overclocking or underclocking your device.

_____________________________________________________________

DISCLAIMER
I have only tested this on an iPhone 3G running 3.1.3, as well as an iPhone 2G running 3.1.3. I assume that this WILL work for the 3Gs, as well as the iPod Touch family. The architecture is almost identical, though I take no responsibility for a bricked device.

You use this at your OWN RISK. I take no credit for this hack.

Don't bother trying to use SYSinfo to see if you have a higher clock speed. I'm starting to believe SYSinfo uses your iDevice's model number to look up the specs it displays.

_____________________________________________________________

How it works

This hack edits the "fstab" file located in your iDevice's boot sector, adding the CPUFrequency control before it loads the firmware, therefore increasing the CPU speed before the iPhone OS locks out the command.

_____________________________________________________________

What I experienced after the hack

Since I did this to my 3G, I have noticed a considerable increase in load time for apps, all my games seem to run much faster and smoother. Boot time is not a noticeable difference, but then again, the 3Gs jailbroken takes a while to boot too. This is definitely not a placebo. I swear my device is faster. - I also have noticed a slight decrease in battery life, which only convinces me further that the hack is infact working correctly.

_____________________________________________________________

HOW TO DO IT

1. SSH into your device and navigate to "/Private/etc/" and copy the file "fstab" to your computer, make sure you have 2 copies, one for backup, and one to edit. (This can also be done with iFile, but it is suggested that you use SSH so that a backup can be made on your computer.)

2. Open the file using Notepad, or Text Editor on mac. (or iFile on your iDevice, if you'd like)

3. When you open the file, you should see something like this. (may vary a little by device)
Quote:
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs rw 0 1
/dev/disk0s2 /private/var hfs rw 0 2
add the following lines of code BEFORE what is already there.

Quote:
su
alpine (or your personal root password)
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency_max=???000000 (Replace ??? with your desired 3 digit speed in mHz. Make sure there are 6 zeros following your setting.)
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency=???000000 (same as above)
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency_min=???000000 (set to about your actual clock speed, use wikipedia or google to find your device's clock speed.)
UPDATE - Since your iDevice has a stepping processor, which lowers CPU speed when battery gets to a certain level, or when idle, you can set hw.cpufrequency_min to something higher if you'd like more speed all the time. Don't go higher than cpufrequency_max, and be reasonable.
My 3G is set to 550mHz, with a 450mHz minimum.

4. When you're finished, the fstab file should look something like this. (with whatever settings you put in, may vary by device a little)

Quote:
su
alpine
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency_max=550000000
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency=550000000
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency_min=450000000
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs rw 0 1
/dev/disk0s2 /private/var hfs rw 0 2
Save the file, and return to the "/Private/etc/", replace the original with the modified version, just to be sure, set the permissions to 0755. (You made a backup, right?)

5. Reboot the iDevice, it might take a little longer than usual, you just tripled the size of one of the main boot files.

6. Enjoy your now overclocked/underclocked idevice.

How long have you been running this and has it ever boot into safe mode? Just wondering. If not may try it out. Thanks for any information.

Hi Mr.T

Aint we got already the same Discussion earlier??
I also asked ya about a screenshot with sysinfo plus or mobile terminal ,
(su - alpine) type 'sysctl hw.cpufrequency but u should know .
Why u not posting a screenie as a proof that this works its not the first time i ask ya
and if i would be you i had done it already to make those people like me shut up.
(and me some words less to type )
I dont wanna mess arround with ma phone thats why i like to have some Proofs before i try this .

It is bullshit. I tried to edit the fstab file, but nothing happened. I checked with mobileterminal, and nothing changed.

IT DOESN'T WORKS!

If this hack works, then i dont see why this couldnt help 3G and possibly 2G (if custom firmware is produced) users with multi-tasking on 4.0 FW (if it was tweaked for the firmware). As of right now the processor is too slow to preform all the required tasks (crashes). This could change that....if it really works.
just food for thought...

Trying it now, Asphalt seems to be running smoother than before along with Ganster: West Coast Hussle. Overall it seems slightly faster to me but it could be the placebo effect =P

iTouch 8GB 3rd Gen, 530Mhz to 600mhz

Gonna test on a 3g iphone later.

--EDIT--

To actually test this works I supposidly 'Underclocked' my device and I didnt really notice anything different, even with gameplay.
Code:
su
alpine
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency_max=300000000
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency=300000000
sysctl -w hw.cpufrequency_min=300000000
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs rw 0 1
/dev/disk0s2 /private/var hfs rw 0 2
And also judging by this thread i'm wondering whether this actually does anything at all. Overclocking iphone or ipod touch for - Page 40 - iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad forum - Multi-Touch Fans

Sysinfoplus free in cydia or mobile terminal ,will show a accurate result of the actual cpu speed.
Log in to terminal (su - alpine) type : 'sysctl hw.cpufrequency" and u see the result if overclocking workzz.

Funny thread in da "touch" forum
but they are pretty fast offendet if u dont hit da right tone in a conversation this forum would death for them the way we talk sometimes hahaha

I done the terminal thing you suggested to check if it changed and it didn't. Just for the sake of it i'll still try it on a 3G iphone later.

HA

I read only to be honest from side 40 to the end but they teached me this will work never ever since pretty smart people with the know how and the equipment like the dev team didnt found out where and how to overclock the 3g etc, and if they say the would need actual someone from Apple who's been fired and would tell how to do but unfurtionally there aint nobody(whatz with da guy who lost da "prototype" ) this will never be done.

And know what ill get ma 3gs soon so - F U C K - it .
Overclocking my 2y old iPhone with original akku,
hahaha how long should that thing work like 30-45 min in 600 mhz ?
Get outta here lol ....--------------------->

As i've said. Judge for yourself.

I've noticed a supreme difference in the way my iPhone handles memory... Everything IS snappier.

I strongly suggest you do a little research. Most of these system info apps for iPhone are bullshit.
They ONLY give you info based on your model number, not by your actual specs. - Not to mention that the iPhone was not designed to accept this command while running the firmware, and since the CPUfrequency command is blocked once the iPhone is booted, using CPUfrequency in mobile terminal is pointless. - I'd bet money on this one.

Well I've literally just installed this on my 3g, and so far it DOES seem faster.

However, I am stoned, so I will see how it runs over the next couple days.
