Firmware 4.0 Pre-Jailbroken Custom IPSW Files
Couple of questions that need to be answered...
Q: Does this update my baseband?
A: NO! As with all Custom IPSW's I provide they will NOT update you baseband. HOWEVER see next question below for more info.
Q: What if I want to upgrade to the new baseband since ultrasn0w supports them all now?
A: Normally you would just upgrade your phone using an OFFICIAL IPSW from Crapple which would cause your baseband to be upgraded and then you would use the Custom IPSW to Jailbreak. HOWEVER, you cannot do that at this time because you can only use a Custom IPSW to upgrade if your device is already Jailbroken. There is an option in PwnageTool which ALLOWS updating of the baseband. If you really want to update your baseband that bad then I suggest you create your own IPSW's with PwnageTool. I MIGHT consider uploading some IPSW's that will allow you to UPDATE your BASEBAND/MODEM FIRMWARE but right now just be Thankful with what you got 
Q: I don't like the Custom Boot/Restore Logos you have provided.
A: That's fine then sounds like you need to make your own Custom IPSW's then

These CUSTOM IPSW's are ALREADY JAILBROKEN! That's the whole point of having a Custom IPSW is so that it's already Jailbroken and ready to go. DO NOT try to run redsn0w, blackra1n, Spirit or anything else on these after you restore because you will screw up your device and have to start over.
To use these files you must download all parts of the Custom IPSW file that you want to use. Then use WinRAR to extract them. Just right click on ANY of the RAR files that you download and WinRAR will extract the files leaving you with ONE IPSW file that you will restore with. It doesn't matter if you extract Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 etc etc, they will all extract the same way leaving you with just ONE IPSW file.
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST CAREFULLY, THERE ARE KNOWN UPGRADE TRAPS AND DIFFERENT UPGRADE SCENARIOS THAT NEED TO BE FULLY UNDERSTOOD AND CONSIDERED BEFORE USING THESE TOOLS.
Each supported device has few different scenarios that you need to consider when performing the upgrades, you need to check below and perform the upgrade in the particular way that matches your current device state.
NB: Certain devices are not supported this is because they are not supported in iOS 4.0 or they are not supported by custom fw.
- iPhone 2G - not supported
- iPod Touch - not supported
- iPod Touch 3G - not supported
iPhone 3GS
Summary: Currently custom ipsw's only work on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.
- If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can use these Custom IPSW's to restore with your jailbroken 3GS in recovery mode.
- If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported .
iPhone 3G- If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you can use these Custom IPSW's restore your 3G in recovery mode or DFU mode.
- If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.0 ipsw using DFU mode.
- If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
- As an alternative to these Custom IPSW's, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac)
IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.
iPod Touch 2G- If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit or the new Redsnow 0.9.5 beta 5 exploit for iOS4) then you can restore using recovery mode.
- As an alternative to these Custom IPSW's, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.
Baseband Unlock- As you probably know by now, ultrasn0w has been updated to cover all basebands from 04.26.08 onward. You can get more info here
UNLOCK YOUR IPHONE with ultrasn0w v0.9.3 - SiNfuL iPhone
- iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband unlockers (those who rely on ultrasn0w to make phone calls) should always be very wary to update their firmware, however our Ultrasn0w application will unlock all recent (including the current) 3GS and 3G baseband firmware versions. Once you are jailbroken using PwnageTool 4.0, install ultrasn0w from Cydia and you’ll be unlocked.
- Remember! This baseband unlock situation is rare, should you upgrade your iPhone blindly at the next iOS release please don’t expect an unlock - but for now you are OK (whatever state your baseband is in).
HOW TO USE- Download the correct IPSW files from below
- For Windows users open iTunes and hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard and select RESTORE
- For Mac users open iTunes and hold down the OPTION key on your keyboard and select RESTORE

So for the 3GS does it mean it currently has to jail broken. Eg mine is jail broken it's one of the first iPhones came out Does that mean it's on old boot rom? So can I update to 4.0 then use restore with ur jail broken ipsw?

What's about a Spirit-Jailbroken device on 3.1.2? Do I have to restore my device first on 3.1.2 and then use the custom Firmware to update?

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can use these Custom
So for one with 3.1.3 and old FW (I guess) there is no way to use the "good" way of JB 4.0.
Or if I restore the phone to 3.1.3 non JB as it came out of the box and then go with this tut?
Or will there be more tools available soon to support other setups?
