This kind of bums me out and is a bit creepy.

Leaked: Apple Stealing All FaceTime Information, ATT Locks Users via OTA Updates

I think I remember that you are suppose to post the text vs. posting a link but for some reason it wouldn't let me just copy, paste, and pay respect to the author. I do apologize but thought this was pretty good info for those who have bought or may be buying an iPhone 4. Stuff like this makes me a bit regretful of placing the order for mine yesterday. Anyway, hope this is useful to some, if not all. Cheers.

but the link you provided.. has an update 1st july..

the phone will not lock.. it is only updating carrier settings.. these include APN and MMS settings for your carrier

So once there is a jailbreak for the iPhone 4, it will be un-jailbroken once the new OTA update is out within 2 weeks later, and so on and so on? So you will have to continue to jailbreak it at least once every 2 weeks. Is that what it's saying in the last paragraph? If it is, that kind of sucks.

NO.. the author of the post has apologized... there is no OTA lock !!!
Quote:
Editor’s Note [July 1st]: For the record, we were wrong about AT&T locking all US iPhone owners. Their OTA updates actually check the settings and make sure they are up-to-date. If the settings are not updated, the internet will be disabled. You can only regain access when you upgrade to the latest carrier update. Read more about it here:-
ATT Pushes First OTA Update Changing Carrier To 7.1

We apologize for the error in our part, our source has apologized for it as well. We will be covering more leaks as they come out and will double check them before posting.

But if you click on the "read more" link within that apology and read the last paragraph, it appears it still locks your internet, not your phone. So therefor, it's doesn't "brick" your phone, just turns off (basically) the data network (edge, 3G, etc). That's what I'm referring to.

You can always make carrier bundle by yourself so even with update you can set everything the way you want

So OTA is not an issue. With a jailbroken phone you have control over your device not them.

Hi Xplode, that's what I've understood from my current jailbroken iPhone 2G. But from what I'm gathering the "read more" portion to say is the OTA "update" will basically send out a ping to check the settings for APN and MMS. If these settings are different then how they are suppose to be according to AT&T, then it will ask you to update. If you update, it will apparently in turn, ruin your jailbreak (once available). If you don't update, then it won't lock your phone completely but will lock your internet (data network connection) until you do update, which will again, ruin your jailbreak. Am I just reading this completely wrong?

I call complete bullshit. I worked for Apple in the 80's and this is not how they talk. This is some 16 year old kid pulling some stupid prank.

we have had this come up on the forum before. OTA's do not include any lockout, the only thing they have are mms, and internet settings most of the time, along with carrier setting. do your homework

If theres a will theres a way. When apple posted all those job listings for Antenna engineers they also posted job listings for OTA engineers.

If the server/system is set up correctly, they could do anything. Lock the phone, Even update the software via a OTA update.

Just like how the Sidekick Danger servers are set up.
X amount of users get are sent a OTA update message and are able to download the OS update, then the phone downloads the files/reboots the phone.

1. This makes me happy AT&T has no control over my phone or me

2. This makes me doubt whether I want to have anything to do with Apple...

On one hand I want to call BS, on the other hand I want to say WTF, that being said...
Apple has been stretching the limits to legality, we all heard of Apples search of the journalists apartment, Apple seems to think that they are above reproach.

I keep getting a picture if iRobot here, like "we are only doing this to protect you"

What to do, what to do...?

---------- EDIT ----------

that's the thing my friend, Apple has no link to these phones without AT&T, you cannot have one without the other, AT&T would have to push the signal out, and have to be backing Apple's decision to make this happen.

I agree, But if you use iTunes to sync your information/music. They COULD OTA through iTunes while "backing your device up"

It won't be a "true OTA" per se, but still leave the affect of altering files.

they can not force you to update. they can only give you an option to do so.

Correct, But they can Force you to update iTunes and disable syncing unless you accept the OTA.
