The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible

Hi,
I have an iPhone 3G and I accidentally upgraded to firmware 3.1.2 via iTunes. I tried to jailbreak it by restoring it to iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore_SiNfuL_iPhone_4.ipsw but received an error saying 'The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware is not compatible. If I drop out of the DFU mode, I am stuck at the summary page. I could not use my phone at all. Can someone help me? Thanks a mil.

PS. I have tried the latest Pwnge 3.1.4 to generate a custom restore file. I also received the same error message. Is there a way to downgrade the firmware to 3.0 or earlier version?

Try restoring your phone in DFU Mode, if that doesn't work then try downgrading your iTunes back to iTunes 8 and try again.

Hi,

I tried to put my iPhone into jailbreak DFU mode following the steps as described in your other post. The whole 'jailbreaking' went 'smoothly'. However, through out the whole process, my iPhone only turned black and never turned white. So I never had a chance to cancel the process. My attempt to restore to the custom restore file failed again with the same result. Is there other way to force my iPhone into jailbreak DFU mode? Thanks.

PS. I noticed on my iTunes summary page for iPhone, it only shows my iPhone name and the serial number. Both capacity and version show 'n/a'. I don't think it's normal. Did something get corrupted?

---------- EDIT ----------

ohh then after you get blackra1n to work then sync.

I wasn't jailbroken when I upgraded my phone to 3.1.2. But then I use Pwnage 3.1.4 to jailbreak and unlock the phone it didn't work. I was not able to restore using custom_restore. I also tried blackra1n RC1 and RC2. Nothing works. I keep getting the same response...firmware file is not compatible. So far, no one is able to solve my problem yet....my phone is current completely unusable except to make an emergency call...

Restore with original firmware. Then JB with blackra1n. If you also need to unlock, that is available now as well -- this was the reason for not using blackra1n before, but now the baseband unlocker will be installed. be sure to use the latest version.

I know this is old but the samething happened to me.
All I did was use Blackra1n RC1 then used a custom IPSW and it worked fine for me.

---------- EDIT ----------

And Blackra1n RC3 should work, it works wonders
