iOS 4.1 is Unlock Friendly!
***PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU BEGIN!***
***iPhone 4 ONLY!***

I put my money where my mouth is. I tested my code on my own iPhone 4 and was able to update to 4.1 without touching my baseband.
The only doctoring I did was removing my private info. The newest version of TinyUmbrella will have an added side-benefit of allowing you to update to 4.1 without the fear of baseband update. Of course, in order to downgrade back to 4.0.x you need to have your SHSH saved on Cydia or locally. Have fun
I've also seen a TON of questions about how to update from 4.0.x to 4.1 WITHOUT updating your baseband. I'll give you a quick rundown of how to do it.
- Get the latest TinyUmbrella (4.1.3)
- READ THE README TinyUmbrella README NOW Yes. You Read it.
- Run TinyUmbrella.
- Start TSS Server
- Open iTunes
- Restore 4.1 (NOT UPDATE) Yes this requires you to download 4.1 Here
- Let iTunes error with 1004 error (baseband update failed - we want this
)
- Kick Device Out of Recovery
- \o/ -- You are now on 4.1 with 1.59.00 baseband!
Also, here is another good tutorial with more details.
I have heard a few folks voice concerns about how they can downgrade their 2.x baseband to 1.59.00 on iPhone4. Here are the basic steps:
- Close TinyUmbrella (if open)
- Close iTunes (if open)
- Remove ALL lines in your hosts file that contain gs.apple.com
- Windows: Start -> cmd -> ipconfig /flushdns
- Mac: Terminal -> dscacheutil -flushcache
- Start iTunes
- Restore (NOT UPDATE) Stock 4.0.2 iPhone 4 - 4.0.2 Download
Note that this will only work while Apple is signing 4.0.2 SHSH requests. This is due to the way Apple now updates/restores Baseband Firmware for the iPhone 4 different from the way it did to prior devices. Lucky us...
VIA: The Firmware Umbrella: TinyUmbrella with 4.1 Support

I don't know if this will work on 3GS or not, I have my SHSH Blobs saved, so I'll give it a shot. I'm not sure what baseband I'm running right now, but what does it technically mean, if you restore to a 1.**.** Baseband?

Same here! And it's going to stay that way until my 3Gs explodes, breaks, gets stolen, or is lost.

Updating to the newest baseband 2.xx.xx, I think it is, will NOT allow you to unlock your phone. Restoring back to the 1.xx.xx bb's WILL let you unlock your phone. Updating to iOS 4.1 will update the bb to 2.xx.xx forcing you to lose your T-Mobile or other service on the iPhone.
Might have said to much there but I hope you get the point...

dont do it on ur 3gs man, they guys who cooked tiny umberella up, did this on his iphone 4. in his previous post this is what he stated
Baseband Protection - Updating to 4.1 using TinyUmbrella will protect your baseband from update. THIS ONLY APPLIES TO IPHONE 4!!!!! If you have a 3G or 3GS and you update to 4.1 your baseband will likely be updated.

Ahh I see, well, I don't have T-Mobile, AT&T is still railing me w/their contract til March 2012, pretty much the end of the world...so I'm guessing this probably won't really apply to me. Thanks for the quick responses and the clarification on the baseband.

Yeah, I don't plan on doing this to my 3GS, I already have it Jailbroken at 4.0.1 and I don't think there is a point in upgrading, to be honest, I don't think I'll upgrade until probably 4.2 - I mean, what's the point in this one? If 4.1 had any viable changes worth getting, I think I would be inclined to, but honestly, I haven't seen much.

No problem, BUUUUTTT updating the baseband DOES increase connectivity issues with signal strength/towers. So if on the official ATT carrier, it's BEST to be on the latest BB, but not to update your iOS Firmware too high where you lose your jailbreak.
Also, if you want to SELL your official iPhone, to keep the BB in mind if you need to unlock it for someone.

Ahh I see, well, I'll always keep my options open, I might opt out of my AT&T contract and move over to T-Mobile, not for nothing but only because AT&T just changed parts of my contracts prices and etc. I think it might be time to move out and I'm pretty sure I can dispute the legal fees....

Hello, I followed the guide correctly and after starting tinyumbrella, open my itunes and attempt to restore my iphone 4 using the 4.1 firmware that I downloaded but I got error 3002. I tried putting my iphone in recovery and dfu mode and still got the same error. What is the problem??

So what is the ios4.1 going to really give us over the ios4.0. Is it best to wait for 4.2
Threads are saying proximity censor not fixed, games centre is on cydia.... What about picture folders or is that just in 4.2.
Just a couple of month away from 4.2 with clear definitive updates... Mmmmmm... Maybe best to wait.
And it is for the iPad, lovely
