Icon4 Mobile Mail Process WONT STOP!

I've been noticing using the "Free mem" feature in SB settings that my mobile mail app is continuously running in the background, though I have push and fetch turned off...

Is there any way to kill it, I close the process, but it opens as soon as I do anything else on my phone...

It's eating like 5mb of Ram, i'd rather have that for other apps.

I'm on a 3G running 3.1.2, my GF's 2G on 3.1.2 doesn't have this problem.

THANKS!

Gotta go into advanced mail settings and turn it all to manual. Although certain apps like contacts for example will bring mail back up

But my GF's 1st Gen iPhone is running the same way as mine, JBed with Blackra1n...

Both have mad apps...

But her mail app doesn't stay open...

Strange.

this is a copy paste from modmyi, post by DarkWombat

Using iPhone Browser: On the left pane there is a file tree.

Go to Applications -> Mobilemail.app

Rename Mobilemap.app to something like Mobilemailx.app (something different from the original name)

Click on Mobilemail.app (or whatever the new name of the folder is) and on the right pane there will be a listing of files in that folder.

Right click on Info.plist and click Save As, save it to your desktop or something. Open it in a text editor like Notepad.

Find the phrase <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> and after it there should be something that says <string>com.apple.mobilemail</string>

Replace mobilemail with mobilemailx or whatever the new name you chose for mobilemail.app is. Save the file and drag it over the original Info.plist file in iPhone Browser. The program will replace the original file while making a backup in its default backup folder, which you can see by going to File -> View Backup Files

Re-spring your phone and it should work. You will notice that Mail is now called Mobilemailx or whatever the new name you chose was. I went to Cydia and downloaded an app called Rename to change the displayed app name in Springboard back to Mail. If you can't find this app on Cydia you will need to add http://iphone.org.hk/apt/ to your sources and then it should show up.

This works perfect! I did the same with Music too, same results. You cannot open the plist file in notepad tho, you need to use a program such as plist editor (Download iPod software for Windows) to edit it.

My ram is now at ~255MB on restart instead of ~200.

Thanks!

*edit* of course neither of them are opening up now... ios 5.0.1
playing around and will post results if i find a fix that allows them to still run...

Nope, unless someone can find where IOS decides to autoload mail, its either always running or cant run at all.

I'll be testing this for a day or two before i really know, but it looks like you can set up backgrounder to shut it off when you close the app. I have all of my email addresses set to manual. I have backgrounder mail settings on native/fast app switching-on/enable at launch-on/stay enabled-on/ everything else is toggled to off. I first tried using the very first option of "off" (right above native that I have selected) but it wouldn't background at all, even when I wanted it to background. I have to manually turn off the mail app when I'm done using it with my current settings but so far it has not turned back on by itself.

Necro bump, but I may as well answer this.
If you have Mail set to Push (auto retrieve emails in time intervals,) it will ALWAYS run in the background. When you set it to push manually (check for emails when you open Mail app) the process won't always appear when you don't have it running.
