Get Into DFU mode without Home Button Or Power Button Working

HOW TO: Put The iPhone In DFU Mode And Jailbreak, Even If Your Home Or Power Button Is Broken

As you know, to get into DFU you must press the two buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds, but some times one of the two buttons will break. An alternative to jailbreak without having to go into the DFU mode is to use Blackra1n. However, if the iPhone freezes and you need to restore the firmware to do it again, this guide will come back again very useful.

What you need:

original Apple firmware
BetterZip on Mac or WinZip on Windows (or something similar, your choice)

How to do it:

1. Create a copy of the original apple firmware and change the file extension from .ipsw to .zip

2. Unpack the .zip file to view its content. Navigate to Firmware > all_flash

3. Inside you will get two folders ( all_flash.m68ap.production and all_flash.n82ap.production ) and both of them will contain various files. The ones you are interested in are:
LLB.m ** ap.RELEASE.img3
applelogo.xxx.img3
NOTE: asterisks stands for 68 or 82 – depending on the folder. “xxx” is a different number for each device.

4. Delete the LLB.m ** ap.RELEASE.img3 file in both folders and rename the applelogo.xxx.img3 file to LLB.m ** ap.RELEASE.img3

5. Save everything and rename the file back from .zip to .ipsw

6. Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your computer, open iTunes and click the “Restore” button while holding down the Alt key if you’re using Mac (Shift key if you’re on Windows). Now browsed for the modified .ipsw and restore your device with it.When iTunes is done restoring your device with the custom firmware, your iPhone/iTouch will load directly into the DFU mode and now you can restore with a custom jailbreak firmware.

So basically what you are doing here is, making LLB (which is not there) invalidate iBoot which causes it to go into a DFU loop. (thx iH8sn0w for your input )

Here is a quick on extracted .ipsw before and after change
1: Before change >

2: After change >

If you notice In Pic #2 So there are both file present with same size which mean's both file's are applelogo.xxx.img3
Just change name of a copy (applelogo.xxx.img3) and don't delete the original one
may this come handy

Hi i tried using your method to put my brothers 3g into dfu mode but everytime i try and restore an error comes up in itunes saying that it can't restore the iphone. I tried using tinyumbrella to go around the restore thru itunes activation server because i heard that apple doesnt allow old firmwares to be used for restore anymore. The firmware on the 3g is 4.1.

Thank your for any help you can provide.

What firmware are you trying to install? Did you save the SSH Blobs?

Hello,
I'm not seeing .68 folders in the package, only the .82 folders. I've applied the suggested changes to the .82 files, but iTunes says my device cannot be restored, and gives error code (11). Any suggestions would be great!

iphone 3g ios 4.1, iTunes 10 on OS 10.5.8

I also want to try this method, I have a iPod 2Gen, and it won't DFU at all and the buttons work so its weird , I try this method, but there is only one folder and when i do the change to that one folder it just hangs when you do a restore.

PLEASE more info is needed or testing has to me done on this.

I opened up 4 ipsw's and all of them had no second app folder or w/e

I hope this will work for 4.2 after release and jailbreak. I've been using 4.0.1, jailbreaking with JailbreakMe , then using activator to simulate my lock button. Just been so lazy and not fixing my lock button. Definitely big thanks for when this works.
