How to Enable MMS and Tethering on the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS on 3.0, 3.0.1, and 3.1.2 Firmware

============================================== ===============================================
***UPDATED***
10/19/09- MMS & Tethering Now works with FW 3.1.2 for the iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS
- MMS Now works with iPhone 2G on FW 3.1.2
- Fixed issue where users were having issues getting VisualVoiceMail to work with Tethering and vice versa
=============================================== ==============================================
This thread will show you how to enable MMS & Tethering for the iPhone 3G & 3GS and it will show you how to enable MMS for the iPhone 2G. Tethering is not supported on the 2G iPhone.
This has been tested on T-Mobile USA & AT&T USA. If you are using a different carrier this method should still work you will just have to change your Cellular Data settings manually as shown in Step 5
This will work for Firmware 3.0, 3.0.1, & 3.1.2
Here is a rundown on the Packages that are in the repo.- Enable Tethering for 3G - Enables Tethering for the iPhone 3G on 3.1.2 Firmware. This will automatically install the MMS & Tethering Settings package for you once you install. This package is ONLY for users who are on 3.1.2 FW. If you are on 3.0 or 3.0.1 then you DO NOT NEED THIS. Instead you only need to install the MMS & Tethering Settings from the repo.
- Enable Tethering for 3GS - Enables Tethering for the iPhone 3GS on 3.1.2 Firmware.
- Enable MMS for 2G & 3.0 FW - Is for enabling MMS on the iPhone 2G with 3.0 or 3.0.1 FW. This package will automatically install the MMS & Tethering Settings package.
- Enable MMS for 2G FW & 3.1.2 - Is for enabling MMS on the iPhone 2G with 3.1.2 FW. This package will automatically install the MMS & Tethering Settings package.
- MMS & Tethering Settings - This package adds the correct Cellular Data settings for T-Mobile USA & AT&T USA so that MMS & Tethering will work properly with those carriers that way you don't have to enter them in manually. If you have an iPhone 3G or 3GS that is on 3.0 or 3.0.1 FW then you ONLY need to install this package and nothing else.
How to INSTALL- Be sure that you removed all previous MMS & Tethering Hacks/Profiles if you have any installed. If you have a previous installed MMS & Tethering Settings Hack installed from the SiNfuL iPhone Repo then read below on "How to UPGRADE".
- Open Cydia/Icy and make sure that you have http://www.sinfuliphonerepo.com added to your sources.
- Now tap on the Sections tab and goto the SiNfuL iPhone section.
- If your using a 2G iPhone then you need to either install the package called Enable MMS for 2G & 3.0 FW -OR- Enable MMS for 2G & 3..1.2 FW depending on which FW you are running on your phone. If you are running FW 3.0.1 on your phone then you can just install the package called Enable MMS for 2G & 3.0 FW. Both of these packages will automatically install the MMS & Tethering Settings package as well if you don't already have it installed. This is to update your carrier settings so that everything will work properly.
- If your using an iPhone 3G or 3GS then you only need to install the MMS & Tethering Settings package.
- After you have installed the correct package/packages for your phone, (You will have to REBOOT if your using an iPhone 2G) exit out of Cydia/Icy and goto Settings -> General -> Reset and tap on Reset Network Settings This will flush out all your old settings and ensure that the new settings overwrite any old ones. Make sure you do this on the iPhone 2G as well.
- After your phone reboots now goto Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network and scroll down and tap on Reset Settings. Also at this point you can change any of the APN settings if you need to. For example you might want to use wap.voicestream.com or internet2.voicestream.com for your Cellular Data APN instead of epc.tmobile.com
- If you need to change any of the settings you should reboot your phone so that the new settings will take effect.
- After you reboot your phone you can go into Messages and tap on the create new message icon and you will now have a camera icon across from your send button just like the picture below

How to UPGRADE- If you are UPGRADING from a previously installed MMS & Tethering Settings version that you installed from the SiNfuL iPhone Repo then follow the directions below.
- Open Cydia and use the UPGRADE button to UPGRADE the package.
- Once you are finished, close Cydia and goto Settings -> General -> Reset and tap on Reset Network Settings
- After your phone reboots now goto Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network and scroll down and tap on Reset Settings
- Now compare your settings to the settings below.
Here are what the Cellular Data Network settings look like.

Also be advised that the VisualVoiceMail settings WILL NOT SHOW UP if you are on 3.1.2 FW and your settings will look like this for AT&T.

What kinda issues were you having? What did you do to fix it? I have heard some people are using http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf as the MMS UA Prof URL

I'm on tmobile. The incoming pictures were being resized to the smallest resolution because theres a string in the carrier.plist file you have to change manually no matter what u put in your general network settings in the phone

Yeah I have T-Mobile and AT&T both so I can test either way and I know what your talking about concerning the size issue but have you tried putting in the http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf url into the MMS UA Prof URL setting? Or is that just a worthless option?
Also which plist file are you messing with since your on T-Mobile USA right? Are you editing the carrier.plist file that's in
/System/Library/Carrier Bundles/TMobile_Germany.bundle
I'm gonna try editing the plist file like you said and see how that affects things. Good lookin out

I have been using the "epc.tmobile.com" for my Cellular Data APN in the last few months which is much better / faster for me than "wap.voicestream.com". Any idea if I can use the "epc.tmobile.com" APN instead for the Cellular Data APN or also use it for "Visual Voice" and "MMS"?
Is there a file I should backup via SSH before starting this?
Thanks for the help!

People were reporting that when they received picture messages that the quality was garbage and it's because of the network not being able to recognize the iPhone. I have updated the thread with a new method for enabling MMS on the 2G.

You have to reboot your phone and then the icon will appear. Also what carrier are you using? Did you make sure that you entered in your MMS settings during step 6 & 7? If you don't input any settings no icon will appear.

Have you tried installing my new Tething/MMS hack? I just updated it again last night. I think you might have better luck with those settings. Just follow the guide above. I have noticed that sometimes it takes longer than others to send MMS messages but I have never seen it take longer than 1-2 mins MAX.
I added the network settings to the OP.
